The Netherlands have been pitted against Tunisia, Japan, and Sweden in Group F of the 2026 World Cup, and they are heavy favourites to progress.

The Dutch were held twice by Poland to a draw during their qualifying matches, so they will be relieved that Sweden won the playoff final against them to secure their spot in the group.

🌍 How did the Netherlands qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

Group G of the World Cup qualifiers went all the way down to the final matchday, but the Netherlands got the job done against Lithuania with a 4-0 win. The Dutch were ruthless in the easier matchups, but they did struggle against Poland, who finished second in the group. The Netherlands had the record of six wins and two draws from their eight qualifying matches, and both stalemates came against Poland.

Excluding those games, the Dutch bagged multiple goals in every other qualifying game, highlighting the threat they pose going forward. They bagged 27 goals in total, and eight of those came in a single game against Malta.

👔 Who is the Netherlands manager at the World Cup 2026?

Ronald Koeman returned for his second spell in charge of the Netherlands after the 2022 World Cup, when the Netherlands made it to the quarter-finals. His first stint was marked by disappointment, as his side failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, before losing out in the 2019 Nations League final to Portugal.

However, the Netherlands made it to the semi-finals of Euro 2024 in his second spell, before being eliminated by a last-gasp goal from Ollie Watkins. There is a renewed sense of hope for this World Cup, as Koeman has a strong side available for selection.

🔎 Who are the Netherlands' key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Tijjani Reijnders

Tijjani Reijnders perhaps hasn’t got as much game time for Man City this season as he would have liked, but he is a player with massive talent and is likely to be given a large role for his national side here. Reijnders excels when playing in an advanced midfield role, as he often looks to break into the box and create overloads.

He has scored seven goals in 43 appearances across all competitions this season, and had 15 goals for AC Milan in the previous campaign.

Micky Van de Ven

Micky Van De Ven will probably be looking forward to playing for the Netherlands here, given how poor his domestic season with Spurs has been. The 24-year-old is given a different role for his national side, and looks set to feature in a left-back position.

Van De Ven has shown a tendency to drive forward with the ball, and he often looks to provide overlapping runs for Cody Gakpo. He typically finds himself in advanced areas when playing for the Netherlands, so is one to watch.

Denzel Dumfries

Denzel Dumfries has had an injury-hit campaign, but he seems to have returned at the perfect time. He seems to really come into his element on the international stage and has been a key player since Koeman took charge.

The Inter Milan man registered five goal involvements in six qualifying matches, with three goals and two assists to his name. Despite featuring in the backline, he has a massive role in the final third, and also poses a threat from set-pieces.

The Netherlands have never won the World Cup, and came closest in 2010 when they were runners-up to a generational Spanish side.

Not a lot is expected of Ronald Koeman's side when it comes to winning the entire tournament, and that is reflected in their pricing. The Dutch are currently priced as high as 25/1 to win the World Cup by some bookmakers.

In theory, yes, the Dutch can win the 2026 World Cup.

Not a lot is expected of this Dutch side, with their primary goal threat being a now ageing Memphis Depay.

They will need a generous draw, and they likely top the group, but it seems unlikely the Dutch can go all the way.

The Netherlands are in Group F, alongside Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia.

GK: Verbruggen

DEF: Dumfries, Van Dijk, Van Hecke, Van de Ven

MID: Frenkie de Jong, Gravenberch, Reijnders

ATT: Malen, Memphis Depay, Gakpo

Netherlands vs Japan kicks off at 21:00 GMT on June 14. Netherlands vs Sweden kicks off at 21:00 GMT on June 20. Tunisia vs Netherlands kicks off at 21:00 GMT on June 25.

Should Depay not play, the always reliable (at least internationally) Wout Weghorst could deputise after a solid two seasons at Ajax.

Brian Brobbey has also impressed since signing for Sunderland, with the Black Cats securing Europa League football in a shock league finish of 7th.

Memphis Depay, Teun Koopmeiners, Tijjani Reijnders, Quentin Timber, Tees Smit are all designated penalty takers for the Dutch, and Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo, Virgil Van Dijk are all potential free-kick takers.
