🌍 How did Norway qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

Norway’s qualifying run to the World Cup could not have gone smoother, as they won all eight of their matches to top their group.

They even pulled off a memorable 11-1 victory against Moldova, which is the second-highest winning margin in a European World Cup qualifying match. Haaland bagged five goals in that game, while Thelo Aasgaard also scored a hat-trick off the bench.

Norway scored 37 goals in their eight games, and 16 of those came across two fixtures against Moldova. The Norwegians were also able to secure two impressive victories against Italy, which proves they can compete against the top sides.

Most people would’ve pictured Italy topping the group, but Norway were a real surprise package from the qualifiers.

👔 Who is the Norway manager at the World Cup 2026?

Stale Solbakken typically prefers a 4-3-3 formation, although he switched to a 4-4-2 against the Netherlands in March in the absence of Haaland.

Prior to their World Cup qualifiers, Norway finished top of their Nations League group alongside Austria, Slovenia and Kazakhstan, meaning they were promoted to League A.

Solbakken took over as manager in 2020, and seems to have inherited a golden generation - this will be their first appearance at a major international competition since 2000.

🔎 Who are Norway's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Erling Haaland

It’s impossible to talk about Norway without mentioning Haaland, and he will hope to recover full fitness and form by the time the World Cup rolls around.

After an incredible start to the season, Haaland’s form has retreated recently, but he still has scored 30 goals from his 43 appearances across all competitions.

He added another 16 goals and two assists from his eight matches during the qualifying rounds, which shows how difficult he is to contain.

Sander Berge

Sander Berge is an easy player to overlook in the Norway squad, but the Fulham man is vital in the heart of midfield for providing stability and protecting his backline. Berge started and played the full 90 in all eight of Norway’s qualifying matches, to highlight his importance.

He isn’t renowned for his goalscoring ability, having contributed to just one goal in 35 appearances for Fulham across all competitions this season, but Berge allows the more attacking players in the Norwegian eleven to thrive.

Julian Ryerson

Solbakken likes his team to be aggressive in their play, which means their fullbacks often join the attacks. Julian Ryerson isn’t one to usually hesitate to get forward, and he has been a standout performer for Borussia Dortmund this season.

He has recorded 15 assists from 35 appearances across all competitions at a domestic level, to highlight his contributions in the final third. Ryerson even recorded four assists in a single game against Mainz back in February.

Best Free Bets, Offers & Betting Sites for World Cup 2026

The World Cup is the best time to create a new bookmaker account because the Bookmaker Offers are much better. Andy and the Andy's Bet Club experts have tried and tested the Free Bets and here's their favourites:

You get odds of about 28/1 for Norway to win the World Cup, which is quite short compared to the pricing of other countries around them.

It's their first major tournament appearance since Euro 2000, and they are, according to the bookmakers, more likely to win it than the likes of Morocco, Belgium, and Uruguay.

Norway have world class talen in the likes of Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard to go far in the tournament.

That being said, they do find themselves in a tough group alongside the likes of France, Senegal, and Iraq.

It will be a slog to qualify from the group, but if they play as well as they can, they could go far in North America this summer.

Norway are in Group I alongside France, Senegal, and Iraq.

GK: Nyland

DEF: Ryerson, Ajer, Heggem, Møller Wolfe

MID: Odegaard, Berge, Thorstvedt

ATT: Sorloth, Haaland, Nusa

Iraq vs Norway kicks off at 22:00 GMT on June 16. Norway vs Senegal kicks off at 00:00 GMT on June 23. Norway vs France kicks off at 19:00 GMT on June 26.

Erling Haaland is the best striker in world football, and has been for the past three or four years.

His goal record is not just exceptional at club level, but international level too. He has 55 goals in 49 senior caps, and should he miss any game, it will be a big loss for Norway.

Alex Sorloth has proven himself as a quality goalscorer in his own right and can take some of the burden, but without Haaland, Norway are without their talisman.

Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard are on penalties for Norway, whilst Martin Odegaard, Julian Ryerson, Patrick Berg, and Andreas Schjelderup are on free-kicks.
