Oldham Athletic meet Southend United on Sunday afternoon to do battle for a return to the Football League.
Both sides slipped out of the EFL within the last five years, in large part down to off the field issues affecting their ability to put a squad together on the pitch. Oldham finished 5th during the regular season, whilst Southend finished 7th.

During the regular season games, the first meeting back in September saw the two sides draw 1-1 in a game of few chances. In the most recent game, in which Southend and home advantage, Southend won the game 1-0. The underlying numbers show that they were good value for that victory, winning the xG battle 1.9 to 0.5.
They are the outsiders here, but there doesn’t appear to be much between these two sides. Going on the most recent game, Southend limited to Oldham to very little, and with their comeback from 3-1 down in the play-off quarter-final, and then a win on penalties in the semi-final, it just feels like their name may be written on the trophy.

Veteran striker Joe Garner has been around the lower leagues for a number of years, and despite limited minutes this season he has come alive in the play-offs, scoring against both Halifax and York to contribute towards Oldham’s path to the final.
Garner has made five appearances in the Latics' last six games, playing a total of 262 minutes, so just shy of three full games. In that time, he has picked up three yellow cards, so at a better rather than a card per full game.
Garner should start, but most likely won’t play 90 minutes, so as a result he can ‘put himself about’ to his full capacity without having to conserve energy for later in the game. Of course, this pick is backed by bet365's Sub On Play On, too.

Scott-Morriss has scored 17 goals this season for Southend from right wing-back. Taking away penalties, he is the leagues third top scorer, and will be the player who has scored more non-penalty goals than any other player on the pitch at Wembley on Sunday.
Four players are priced up shorter than Scott-Morriss, all Oldham players, but given we fancy Southend to win, we think he is the best value at 9/4. Given this is likely to be a low scoring affair too, we wouldn’t put you off the first goalscorer price at 13/2.

Expect both sides to like up with three central defenders, wing backs, two central midfielders and an attacking midfielder behind a pair of strikers.
They will each look to utilise their wing backs and deliver crosses into the box as often as possible, with midfield runners arriving late into the box.
Oldham are perhaps slightly more direct, looking for knock downs off a target man, whereas Southend are a bit more patient in build up.
The experience edge is definitely with Oldham’s Micky Mellon, who was won promotion through the National League North, National League and League Two play-offs in the past, whilst this is Kevin Maher’s first taste of the play-offs.
