Ireland’s 1-0 win over Armenia last time out re-ignited their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup, as they are just one point behind Hungary in second.

However, they face a tough test at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday night against a Portugal side that sit top of Group F with an unbeaten record.

These recommended Best Bet Builder Bookmakers are worth a look for the weekend.

Portugal to Win @ 1.33

Roberto Martinez’s side have been dominant this year, having secured the Nations League trophy by beating European champions Spain in the final back in June. The Selecao followed that up with a flawless start to their World Cup Qualifying campaign, winning three successive wins to put them in a prime position to secure automatic qualification.

While they did draw against Hungary last time out, Portugal were much the better side, and were unfortunate to be pegged back by a 91st-minute strike from Dominik Szoboszlai.

Prior to that, Portugal benefited from a dramatic late goal as Ruben Neves secured the points for his side against Ireland when these sides last met in October. It was one-way traffic throughout, as Portugal racked up 70% possession, registering 30 shots in front of a home support. Coaimhin Kelleher was kept incredibly busy, while the Brentford man also denied Cristiano Ronaldo from the penalty spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo Over 3.5 Shots @ 1.40

Cristiano Ronaldo was a frustrated figure when he last faced Ireland back in June, as Kelleher’s time-wasting antics really got under his skin. The 40-year-old registered a total of seven shots, but was unable to breach the Irish defences - his only shot on target of those attempts came from the penalty spot, but he was denied by Kelleher to only adding to his irritation.

Ronaldo did, however, manage to get the last laugh as Ruben Neves scored late on, but there is a bit of added motivation for the veteran striker to perform here, given how that last game went.

Ronaldo continues to operate at the highest level, and he has five goals to his name after just four World Cup group stage matches. In fact, he is averaging 7.48 shots per 90, hitting this mark in all four matches for his national side this season.

Nathan Collins Over 0.5 Fouls Committed @ 1.53

Nathan Collins has committed a foul in three of his four games for Ireland this term, with the only failure coming in the reverse fixture against Portugal. However, it is worth noting that the Brentford man spent the vast majority of the game camped inside his own box, with little room for error.

The hope here is that Ireland can be a bit more proactive in their approach, and assert themselves on the ball given the gamestate and the location of this match in front of a home support.

Collins is averaging 0.88 fouls per 90 for Brentford this season, but does see a notable uptick in infringements for his national side as he usually has a bit more defensive work to get through. The 24-year-old is incredibly aggressive in his duels, and he committed a foul in all five games at the Nations League qualifiers when he played the full 90.

Josh Cullen Over 0.5 Fouls Committed @ 1.33

Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen is a bit of a surprise to commit a foul at this price, especially when you look at his recent run and the fact it's supported by bet365's Sub On Play On.

He may only boast an average of 0.67 fouls per 90 in the Premier League for the Clarets this season, but he has committed a foul in each of his last seven games, including one against Portugal back in October.

His average rises to 1.60 during the current World Cup Qualification group, and is a mainstay in Ireland's midfield under head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson.

He's likely to be up against Tottenham's Joao Palhinha, to somehow contain the Portuguese midfielder at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday night. Palhinha has been fouled at least once in five of his last six, and at least twice in four of his last five across all competitions for club and country.

Ireland only mustered 30% possession in the reverse fixture and won't have many chances in this one. Cullen to commit a foul looks like a solid price.

📈 Republic of Ireland v Portugal Form & Stats

After drawing 2-2 against Portugal in regular time in the Nations League final, the Selecao prevailed on penalties to secure their second title in the competition. It wasn’t an easy run to the final either, as Portugal went unbeaten in their group alongside Croatia, Scotland and Poland, before battling past Denmark and Germany in the knockouts.

They have been able to maintain that momentum into the new season, and their World Cup qualifying campaign started in imperious fashion. A brace from Ronaldo helped his side to a 5-0 against Armenia in Yerevan, while he also repeated that feat against Hungary last time out.

Ireland’s form has been less impressive, but there is still a glimmer of hope that they can still qualify for the World Cup. After taking just one point from their opening three matches in Group F, the situation was looking bleak. But a 1-0 victory against Armenia last time out should give the Irish some confidence here.

However, since Heimir Hallgrimsson took over as manager in September 2024, his side have struggled against the big sides. They were dominated by the Selecao in the reverse fixture, while also losing both fixtures against local rivals England, by an aggregate score of 7-0.

📔 Republic of Ireland v Portugal Formation & Team News

Ireland have been persistent with their 5-2-3 shape this season, with Jake O’Brien, Dara O’Shea and Collins expected to line up at the back. Josh Cullen will hope for a re-call in midfield, while there is a bit of a selection headache for Hallgrimsson up front. Evan Ferguson, who has scored three of Ireland’s four goals in the group so far, has been ruled out of this clash and will continue his recovery with Roma. Adam Idah and Troy Parrott will be hoping to deputise in his place.

Roberto Martinez will almost have a full squad available at his disposal, but his regular first-choice left back Nuno Mendes is a notable absentee. However, the return of PSG duo Joao Neves and Vitinha will provide a welcome boost to Portugal. Rafael Leao has also shaken off injury doubts to feature regularly for AC Milan recently, so will be hoping to break into the starting lineup.
