Boca Juniors v Banfield
🏟
Saturday 2nd July – 01:30AM KO
Boca Juniors are in between the important Copa Libertadores tie with Corinthians and that means that a lot of their regulars will be rested this weekend. Captain Carlos Izquierdoz and Carlos Zambrano are definitely out as they are suspended for this game, but Marcos Rojo will be starting vs Banfield as he won’t feature in the return against the Brazilians (suspended), so Boca’s defence won’t suffer too much.
It looks like star players Sebastián Villa, Exequiel Zeballos, Dario Benedetto and Oscar Romero will all be rested. Except Zeballos they all played the full 90 on Tuesday night in São Paulo. Last week, against Union de Santa Fe, the replacements were pretty shocking at times, but the Libertadores holds far too much weight, so young players like Luis Vazquez and Luca Langoni might get a game again.
Like last week, the usual starters could come in later in the game, as especially Villa and Zeballos their fitness is good enough to play twice a week, but that they aren’t as good going forward in this game is clear. Banfield is mostly steady in defence this season, they don’t offer too much when going forward, but only conceded four goals in five games this season. With two fairly weak attacking forces, unders seems the most likely outcome in this game.

Vélez Sarsfield v Atlético Tucumán
🏟
Saturday 2nd July – 10:00PM KO
Vélez Sarsfield claimed a good victory over River Plate in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday and that exceeded expectations. River looked lacklustre and Vélez could have scored more, but were sloppy with their chances. They scored from an early penalty and kept the ranks closed for the rest of the game. Just like most teams still active in the continental tournaments, the league is not as important at the moment, so Vélez will surely rest the majority of their usual starters this weekend.
Walter Bou joined the side from Defensa y Justicia last week and immediately played a key role for Vélez. Though he could get some game time to get used to his new team, it is more likely that he will be rested for the return of the Copa Libertadores tie. Atlético Tucumán have proven to be unbeatable this season. Since Lucas Pusineri is in charge, they only lost their second game, but since then they have gone eight league games without defeat.
Against Godoy Cruz last week, they deserved more than just the draw. They were the better side most of the game but conceded an equaliser late in the second half. Their biggest problem is that they struggle to score goals. With Ignacio Puch, they have a talented young kid up front, but the 18-year-old is yet to get his first professional goal.
In defence, they have no such problems. Despite changing defensive lines, Tucumán barely give chances away. Tucumán will be without goalkeeper Carlos Lampe again, who got the week off because his wife gave birth on Wednesday. Lampe has been brilliant since he joined, so it is a bit of a blow, but with Vélez having different priorities and Tucumán being unbeaten for so long, I still expect them to get a result here.

Gimnasia de la Plata v Defensa y Justicia
🏟
Sunday 3rd July – 12:30AM KO
Defensa y Justicia have become the victim of their own success, as they lost their four attacking players this month. Carlos Rotondi, Walter Bou, Miguel Merentiel and Francisco Pizzini are all gone and the club has been slow in signing replacements. In fact, so far no attacking players joined the club and the subs from last season can’t bring the same intensity and high-paced attacking football Defensa y Justicia did before the break in May.
Gimnasia de la Plata have a different situation. They have had a great season start with 11 points from five games, despite losing their two best attacking players earlier this month. Winger Johan Carbonero joined Racing Club and Cristian Tarragona, top goalscorer with 10 goals this year damaged his ACL, so he won’t play until 2023, but with Eric Ramirez and Franco Soldano they still have two decent attacking players. The quality is not quite the same, but it is mostly the depth in the squad that has suffered.
Gimnasia have the advantage that they are only playing one tournament and that means the lack of depth hasn’t really cost them yet. They are playing a side in need for quality up front and they are acting slow in doing so, so I suspect Gimnasia to keep their unbeaten run going against Defensa.
