St. Gallen v FC Zurich
🏟
Saturday 30th July – 5:00PM KO
St. Gallen welcomes the struggling reigning Super League champions to kybunpark as they look to build on their first victory of the season that they earned last week against Winterthur.
It was a comfortable result against the newly-promoted side with both goals coming from centre-forward Fabian Schubert, a player that scored 33 goals in 28 matches in the Austrian second-tier in the 20/21 season. He failed to replicate that in his first full season at FCSG, but his two goals were clinical finishes that suggest he is ready to contribute much more often in 22/23. The result also helped to banish the disappointment of the opening day away defeat to Servette, a game that St. Gallen probably deserved a draw in at the very least.
The knives are out for Franco Foda and his FC Zurich team after a title defence that has begun with a whimper, to say the least. A loss to YB was followed up by a goalless draw at home to Luzern, a game that was sandwiched in between a two-legged affair with Azerbaijani side Qarabag. FCZ were poor defensively and looked toothless in attack throughout the tie and were deservedly eliminated in extra-time on Wednesday.
FCSG will fancy their chances against Zurich after their visitors went the distance with Qarabag in midweek. They were also victorious over FCZ at the Letzigrund towards the end of last season and go up against a team here that is looking considerably weaker offensively and defensively than the one that claimed the title. I suggest backing St. Gallen draw no bet here.

Sion v Servette
🏟
Saturday 30th July – 7:30PM KO
The 116th edition of the Derby du Rhone will take place at the Stade Tourbillon on Saturday evening. In my opinion, it is the most intense and passionate of all the derby matches in Switzerland and the Valais will be full of noise and colour for this latest meeting.
It was no surprise to see FC Sion come up short against Young Boys last weekend. Despite their unexpected win over Lugano to begin their campaign, taking anything from YB was always going to be a tall order. More worrying than the result, they conceded two goals after just six minutes and were essentially out of the game at that point before YB added another in the 88th minute to seal the win.
Servette will be content with their own start having edged out St. Gallen before snatching a late draw in Basel last time out. SFC had goalkeeper Jeremy Frick to thank for that, his heroic performance denied FCB the crucial second goal and gave Servette that opportunity to strike late. Truth be told, the performances have been a little uninspiring, but they’re getting the job done and proving a tough side to break down.
Other than relegated Lausanne, these two scored the fewest goals of anyone in the Super League last season. Not much has changed for the two squads over the summer and I think it’ll be a low-scoring encounter here too. SFC have kept it tight in their opening two games and they can frustrate Sion. Eight of the last ten meetings have also had less than four goals.

Winterthur v Lugano
🏟
Sunday 31st July – 3:30PM KO
Only three sides (FC Zurich, FC Basel and BSC Young Boys) had a better defensive record than FC Lugano last season. The Ticino club have always been noted as a tricky and frustrating side to play against, but they have garnished that style by adding more goals to their game, something that ultimately led to a cup triumph and a fourth-place finish. That is also why their start to the season has been so uncharacteristic and surprising.
FCL travel to Winterthur after two defeats in a row to Sion and Grasshoppers in the previous two games. It seems clear FCL are still adapting after a busy transfer window and they are creating plenty of chances, so it does seem like only a matter of time before they get it right both offensively and with their leaky backline.
Winterthur are also looking for their first win. They came close against Basel but were well-beaten on their travels to kybunpark on Saturday. A packed Schutzenwiese is probably going to be the place where Winti picks up the majority of their points in their return season in the top-flight and it probably ranks as one of the most uncomfortable away trips in the league too.
I still believe Lugano will turn things around with the signings they’ve made and carry plenty of offensive threat overall, but with the way they’ve been defending, I can’t trust them to do it here. Winti will be a different side at home to the one on their travels and they have the quality to hurt Lugano’s defence. I’d go for goals at both ends.

Young Boys v Grasshoppers
🏟
Sunday 31st July – 3:30PM KO
BSC Young Boys remained at the top of the table after the second round of games and they have no intention of vacating that spot either. The capital club have wasted no time, scoring two comprehensive wins in a row that has laid down a marker for the campaign and also backed up their pre-season tag as favourites for the championship that they relinquished last year.
Four games played across the domestic league and UEFA Europa Conference League, eleven goals scored and zero conceded, it is an impressive start under the management of Raphael Wicky. After progression to QR3 of the UECL on Thursday, the visit of relegation candidates Grasshoppers presents the opportunity for YB to keep that momentum going.
GC had to wait to make their Super League bow for 22/23 after their opening game was postponed against Luzern. The wait was more than worth it though as they came out of a difficult home encounter against Lugano with a 2-1 victory.
Despite that victory, this is a tough task in Bern against free-scoring YB. The home side have won five of their last six against GC at this venue and have scored at least two goals in all of them. Given the way YB are playing, I expect a similar result.
