Saturday’s Euro 2024 Qualifying Treble
Netherlands v Republic of Ireland
Ireland will travel to Amsterdam to face the Netherlands on Saturday night.
Three points from this encounter will be enough for Ronald Koeman’s men to qualify for Euro 2024, thanks to his side’s superior head-to-head record over Greece, who will only be able to finish level on points with the Netherlands. The Netherlands have performed relatively well in the qualification stage, winning four of their six games.
The only games they have failed to win have come against tournament favourites France. Offensively, Cody Gakpo has stood out for the hosts, scoring twice, as well as wing back Denzel Dumfries, who has amassed five goal contributions in five starts. Besides their games against France, the hosts have kept things tight at the back, only conceding once in four games.
Ireland can no longer qualify from Group B, having only won two of their seven games. What is more concerning is that both of these wins have come against Gibraltar, who have failed to score a goal in the qualification stage, whilst conceding 21 times. Brighton’s Evan Ferguson has provided Ireland’s biggest attacking threat, amassing three goal contributions; however, they have only managed to score an average of just over one goal per game.
When the pair faced each other in Ireland, the Netherlands won 2-1. With the home advantage on their side, Netherlands will be disappointed with anything less than three points from this fixture.
Switzerland v Kosovo
Switzerland will host Kosovo on Saturday night. A win for the hosts will secure their spot in the summer’s finals.
Switzerland are currently unbeaten in Group I, finding themselves in first place with two games remaining. Games involving the hosts have been full of goals, with Murat Yakin’s side scoring 21 goals and conceding nine in eight games.
Burnley’s Zeki Amdouni has been influential going forward, scoring six times for his country. As always, long-serving internationals Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka have been key for Switzerland, amassing nine goal contributions between them. Manager Yakin will be satisfied with his country’s defensive record, with his side picking up three clean sheets, conceding an average of around one goal per game.
Kosovo can no longer qualify via Group I, possessing a poor head-to-head record against second-placed Romania. Goals have been hard to come by for the visitors, averaging just over one goal scored per game.
These goals have been shared by four players, with their top scorer Milot Rashica scoring three, ultimately highlighting their lack of a prolific forward. Kosovo have been quite strong defensively; however, they have sometimes let things slip, conceding two or more goals on three occasions.
In September, the two sides met in Kosovo, drawing 2-2. Switzerland were unlucky to not come away with three points from this encounter, having dominated play. With the incentive of sealing qualification, as well as the home advantage, the hosts will expect to win this one.
Israel v Romania
Israel and Romania will go head-to-head in Hungary on Saturday night. This game will have a huge impact on the race for qualification.
Israel currently find themselves four points behind second-placed Romania, ultimately needing to win both of their remaining games to have a chance of qualifying.
Israel have struggled going forward, only finding the net eight times in eight games. Their most threatening forward, Shon Weissman, has only scored two goals. The hosts will be without their star man, Manor Solomon, who has been injured since the end of September. Israel have performed reasonably well defensively, only conceding nine goals in total; however, they have only managed to keep one clean sheet.
Romania are unbeaten after eight qualifying games, having won four and drawn four games. The visitors have scored 13 goals, with their joint-top scorers Nicolae Stanciu and Valentin Mihaila netting three goals each. Romania possess one of the best defensive records across all groups, only conceding four goals, keeping five clean sheets.
The last encounter between these two sides ended 1-1. With Israel’s lack of attacking threat and Romania’s incredible defensive record, this game should be a low-scoring encounter, with Romania looking the more likely to win. However, the pair’s previous meeting was quite close; therefore, backing the visitors to either win or draw seems a sensible bet.
