The first half of the 21/22 Credit Suisse Super League season couldn’t have gone much better for FC Zurich. Der Stadtclub (The City Club) were certainly not seen as title contenders at the start of this campaign, having finished down in a lowly eighth place in 2020/21 but the side that have not finished any higher than fourth in the last six years, which included a season in the second tier, are flying high at the top of the Super League with a seven-point advantage over Basel. Their victory at home to St. Gallen before the winter break confirmed FCZ as winter champions for the first time since 2008/2009 and equalled their best start of 11 wins from 17 which was also achieved in that season – the last time they won the title!
A daunting task for fifth-placed Servette awaits at the Letzigrund but the Geneva club ended the first half of 21/22 with five unbeaten games, including a 2-1 victory at champions Young Boys in Bern. That being said, SFC have generally found life difficult on the road, with their three other victories coming at the expense of clubs in the bottom four places in the league.
FCZ have made their home stadium a fortress this season, dropping just four points in nine matches and are yet to be beaten at the Letzigrund. It remains to be seen if FCZ can keep YB and FCB at bay this season, but that imperious form at home should be enough to keep their seven-point advantage at the top for another weekend at least. All that being said, FCZ did drop two of those home points to Servette back in September, so it is worth covering yourself for this one.

Young Boys v Lugano (Super League)

YB return from the winter break in unfamiliar territory and a little wounded after a bruising start to their attempt at securing a fifth league title in a row. It is the first time they have failed to finish as winter champions heading into the winter break since the 16/17 season and worse still, it is the first time since 2013/14 that they have returned from the winter break outside of the top two.
However, with only one competition to focus on after UEFA Champions League and Swiss Cup exits and injury concerns easing, including that of star striker and Super League record goalscorer in a single season Jean Pierre-Nsame, there is much belief that YB can recover the eight-point gap and claim another Swiss title.
Lugano have had an unusual season to say the least, they started with Abel Braga at the helm only for the Brazilian to be unceremoniously let go after just sixty-five days. They were bought by MLS club Chicago Fire’s owner Joe Mansueto and also enjoyed a good first half of the season on the pitch, sitting in fourth just behind FC Basel and BSC YB.
Saturday’s visitors to Bern have a reasonable away record to their name with only four defeats from nine matches but with free-scoring YB nearing full-strength again and a fully-fit Nsame already back on the goal trail in friendly matches, YB can really kick start their season and title challenge.

Lausanne v St. Gallen

It has been a dismal season for Lausanne so far and the INEOS-backed club sit just one point above Luzern in the table, having won only twice in this campaign. It is a huge comedown for a side that finished sixth in their return season in 20/21. All hope is not lost given that they do lie one point above the automatic relegation spot but the visit of St. Gallen to the Stade de la Tulliere looks set to be pivotal if LS wish to have any chance of avoiding playing in the dreaded relegation play-off at the end of the season.
St. Gallen can’t say they’ve had it all bad having won away in Basel and thumped Young Boys by a 3-0 scoreline at home this season but they have been far too inconsistent and are only four points clear of Lausanne in eighth. It should begin to get better for FCSG though after a fantastic winter transfer window that has brought in the arrivals of Julian von Moos, Jordi Quintilla, Matej Maglica and Bastien Toma to the club.
Two sides that leak a lot of goals and don’t score many, it is no surprise that these sides entered into the winter break with no wins in their previous four games and while there is light at the end of the tunnel for St. Gallen, it is hard to see any for Lausanne. FCSG should be able to return from the break with a positive result.

Winterthur v SC Kriens (Challenge League)

FC Winterthur are dreaming of a return to the top-tier of Swiss football for the first time since 1985 but their pre-winter break form damaged their chances as they fell down to third in the table. They remain just outside of the promotion play-off spot and only four points behind league leaders Vaduz but have won just one of their last seven league games, losing four and simply must improve on that to stay in contention. The signings of highly-rated Tician Tushi and Carmine Chiappetta from FC Basel in this window will provide a boost.
The visit of the side at the bottom of the table to the Schutzenwiese is a welcome one for Winti then as hapless SC Kriens seem to be a guaranteed three points for almost everyone at this stage. With only one win and three draws this season, SC Kriens are a mammoth eighteen points from safety and have lost their last six in a row, conceding fifteen goals in the process.
Winterthur are typically strong at home anyway and having already scored six goals past SC Kriens in late October, it is hard to see anything but another heavy defeat for the visiting side that have shipped twenty-nine goals in nine away matches this season.

FC Luzern v FC Basel (Super League)

FC Basel are enjoying their best campaign for several seasons and are firmly entrenched in the title race as they make the trip to the swissporarena on Sunday. FCB know they can ill afford to make any more slips having allowed FC Zurich a seven-point lead at the top with a series of disappointing performances at the end of 2021. FCB were unbeaten in their last seven games before the break but were unimpressive, needing two very late equalisers from Pajtim Kasami to avoid home defeats to struggling Lausanne and Grasshoppers.
Fortunately for FCB, there is more clarity and confidence, with under-pressure manager Patrick Rahmen receiving strong support from the players and Basel investing again in the winter window, though it appears that they are on the verge of losing their star striker and Super League top scorer Arthur Cabral to Fiorentina.The Brazilian has scored 27 goals in 31 appearances this season.
Despite this, Basel will be expected to take the three points from a sorry Luzern side at the bottom of the table that have won only one of their last twenty games stretching back to last season. Luzern do have a habit of performing much more strongly in the second half of the season but they’ll have to postpone any miraculous recovery for another week at least.
