⚪ Confidence Lacking in Seville
Given that Athletic Club lost just two league games at the San Mames last season, it was always going to be a testing gameweek one for Matias Almeyda in his first competitive match as Sevilla manager. Unsurprisingly, his side showed clear signs of teething problems, particularly in defence. Sevilla looked extremely vulnerable in transition, conceding 14 shots that amounted to 2.89 xG.
The final scoreline of 3-2 flattered them in the end, as they only generated 1.01 xG from 12 attempts. Both of their goals came from speculative efforts, with Lucien Agoume and Lukebakio scoring from long-range.
Sevilla finished just one point above the relegation zone last term, and Almeyda may need to adopt a more pragmatic, reserved approach against Getafe to steady their defence. Los Nervionenses struggled on the road in general last season, losing five on the bounce to close out the campaign.
🔵 Azulones Remaining Disciplined Defensively
Jose Bordalas set his side up in a back-five against Celta Vigo, with a clear plan to play on the counter through Christantus Uche and Adrian Liso – the latter joined on loan from Real Zaragoza this summer. Both forwards were asked to put in an immense amount of work off the ball, but they carried out their roles superbly and were rewarded with a goal each. Their effectiveness on the break could not be understated, yet it was the defensive unit that ultimately stole the headlines.
Celta scored freely last season, with only four teams in La Liga finding the net more times. Under Claudio Giraldez, they’ve developed a reputation for their forward-thinking style and effectiveness in the final third. To restrict the Sky Blues to just 0.73 xG on their own turf was an impressive feat and should boost Getafe’s confidence massively.
📊 Sevilla v Getafe H2H
Despite their dreadful 24/25 campaign, Sevilla took four points from Getafe, winning 1-0 at the Ramon-Pizjuan Stadium before playing out a goalless stalemate in the reverse.
Sevilla have won five of the last eight La Liga encounters, with BTTS landing in just one of those games.
