📈 Southampton v Arsenal Form & Tactics

Southampton have done well to get this far in the FA Cup, they are one of only two non Premier League sides left in the competition with the other being Port Vale who take on Chelsea.

They’ve improved quite significantly under Tonda Eckert after a slow start to the season which led to the sacking of Will Still - which was a little harsh as Southampton’s underlying numbers suggested that they should have been operating where they are at the moment, as playoff contenders.

Southampton did beat Premier League opponents in the last round of the FA Cup, overcoming Fulham thanks to a last minute penalty from Ross Stewart. Southampton were a little lucky in that game, but still earned their spot in this round and may welcome the challenge of taking on a depleted Arsenal side.

Arsenal will still be a bit disappointed about their EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester City. Losing a final to Pep Guardiola is no embarrassment, but many expected Arsenal to lift that trophy and it has reopened the conversation about Arsenal struggling to get over the line when it comes to major trophies.

However, Arsenal are still fighting on three fronts and their focus will mainly be on the Premier League and Champions League from now until the end of the season. Arteta may also look to take the FA Cup seriously, with one of Liverpool or Manchester City guaranteed to be out by the semi final stage.

📔 Southampton v Arsenal Formation & Team News

Southampton usually set up in a 4-1-4-1, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tonda Eckert drop one of his more advanced midfielders back to deal with the dominance that Arsenal can have in the middle of the park.

There are some slight injury concerns for Southampton at the moment with star man Leo Scienza still being a doubt for this clash. They could also be without Wellington, who has grown into his role in the squad and will be a miss for the home side.

Arsenal have a lengthy injury list, though I would guess that not all of these players are unfit. It’s normal for teams fighting on various fronts to call their players back from the international break early at this point in the season, mainly to safeguard against any unnecessary injuries that they may pick up in friendlies.

Arsenal should continue in their 4-2-3-1 shape, though they do look to build in a back three when in possession. The lack of fit first team players should mean that Max Dowman gets another start in the FA Cup after impressing against Mansfield last time out.
