The Saints are looking to march right into the top six following a difficult start to the season, but Swansea have been able to maintain a top half berth since the beginning of the campaign.

A Southampton win would allow them to leapfrog over the Swans and get themselves to the edge of the playoff picture.

Southampton v Swansea Best Bet

Fixtures for: Saturday 18th October

Southampton v Swansea

Championship

12:30

Both Teams to Score

The price for both teams to score is a little bigger than I was expecting when I completed my research on this fixture.

Southampton have scored and conceded in each of their last five matches in all competitions. Overall, they have seen BTTS land in eight of their nine Championship matches, the only exception being a 0-0 draw in the derby with Portsmouth. Even in that match both teams could’ve scored, as they both generated chances that were equivalent to a goal each, but didn’t manage to convert any.

Indeed, it is not a surprise to see that Southampton are such regular purveyors of BTTS matches when we look at their expected goal data. They rank second in the league for expected goals, with a total of 15.5xG across nine matches, but they also have conceded over 11xG at the other end.

Can Swansea contribute to this? It certainly seems that way, five out of Swansea’s last six matches in all competitions have seen both teams score. They aren’t as strong in terms of chance creation as Southampton, only 9.1xG so far in total, but their match record is encouraging, especially in combination of what we have seen from Southampton as well.

📈 Southampton v Swansea Form & Stats

Southampton have had a rocky start, not helped by the defensive shoddiness that we have already discussed in terms of their BTTS likelihood. They are starting to look better going forwards though, Will Still is taking his time to get the system right, but the international break could have done him some good.

Saints have lost only one of their last six in the league, but they have only won one as well. Too many draws in matches that they were the more threatening side has been the theme so far for Southampton.

We already know that they are second for xG in the whole league, and they are seventh for shots on target and big chances created. One surprising stat is that they are 23rd in the league for possession recovered in the final third, something that I wouldn’t have expected from a top Championship team.

After a solid start, there are signs of concern for Alan Sheehan. Fans have been quick to call Sheehan out when results aren’t provided, they have won one of their last five Championship matches, at struggling Blackburn, and their 1-3 defeat at home to Leicester was too much for some fans to take. Overall, Swansea have won three, drawn three, and lost three, and, appropriately, that leaves them in 12th place.

Swansea seem to have retained some of their historic DNA despite changing managers fairly regularly over the last few seasons. They are ranked fourth for possession in the early stages of the league, as well as fourth for accurate passes per match.

Interestingly, they are also fifth for accurate long passes per match, so they can mix it up when they need to. However, they really need to improve in the final third, they currently rank bottom for big chances created, they can’t finish in the top six if that continues.
