FC Basel v Sion
🏟
Sunday 6th February – 1:15PM KO
After a disappointing end to 2021 with some laboured performances to boot and the departures of first-team defender Eray Comert and Swiss Super League top goalscorer Arthur Cabral, FC Basel’s 3-0 victory over Luzern at the swissporarena last weekend was the perfect tonic for manager Patrick Rahmen and the FCB fans. A visit to Luzern is never easy but an inspired performance by Fabian Frei led his side to a much-needed three points after wins for fellow title challengers Zurich and YB the previous day.
After a relegation scare last season, FC Sion will be delighted to be sitting twelve points clear of any trapdoor trouble this time around. There is now plenty of optimism that they can catch their Derby du Rhone rivals Servette and eventually break into the top four after they returned to action with a 2-0 win over Grasshoppers last Sunday.
FC Sion have the worst away defence in the league, are generally poor away form and haven’t won in the league in Basel since 1997, so there seems to be only one way this match will go. FCB’s win over Luzern won’t have convinced everyone that they are over their sticky patch of form from the end of the year but another dominant victory over Sion just might.

St. Gallen v Young Boys
🏟
Sunday 6th February – 3:30PM KO
In recent seasons, St. Gallen and Young Boys have rarely failed to deliver drama on the pitch. Their surprise title tussle in 19/20 brought two of the most entertaining games of that season, with YB edging out FCSG in Bern by a 4-3 score line and finding a last-gasp equaliser to earn a 3-3 draw at Kybun Park a few months later.
St. Gallen come into this weekend with renewed confidence after their impressive 5-1 thrashing of Lausanne at the Tulliere last weekend. The win was a much needed boost following their underwhelming first half of the season in which they simply underperformed. With new winter signings on board, FCSG will expect to rise up the table and will be certain they can cause the Swiss champions problems.
Young Boys were rather disappointing in their home match with Lugano last weekend as they edged out a 1-0 win after a late goal by Christian Fassnacht. With the news that Jean-Pierre Nsame has left the club to join Venezia on loan and a month-long injury to Meschack Elia also revealed, the pressure on Fassnacht and also on USA international Jordan Siebatcheu increases as YB attempt to claw back the eight-point lead FCZ hold at the top.
FCSG found their goal-scoring touch last weekend, YB look far from convincing and this fixture has produced a staggering 82 goals in the last twenty meetings, with sixteen of those having goals at both ends. For those reasons, I expect the same again on Sunday.
