In a lengthy journey for Bournemouth, they travel to the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon to face a well-organised and thriving Sunderland team.

The hosts have massively exceeded expectations since their return to the Premier League, with 19 points after twelve games, they look well placed to avoid the drop and secure a midtable finish.

It’s been a similar tale for Bournemouth; they sit one spot behind Sunderland in 8th place, but will be hoping to improve on a return of just two wins from their last eight games.

📈 Sunderland v Bournemouth Form & Stats

It’s been an amazing start to the season for Sunderland. After winning the play-off final in rather fortuitous circumstances, they’ve recruited excellently for the Premier League and currently find themselves in 7th place. There’s been a huge emphasis on finding players with a very strong physical profile, and it’s worked a treat so far.

A fantastic recent run of four results saw them pick up two wins and two draws, with a notable win at Stamford Bridge and draw against Arsenal. A lacklustre defeat against Fulham last week was a sobering reminder about the harsh realities of the Premier League.

After a defensive exodus at the end of the season, which sounded alarm bells, Bournemouth have replaced their departures adequately and started the season in fine fashion. There’s no doubt the stock of Andoni Iraola will be continually rising. However, Bournemouth are without a win in three matches, and have started conceding an alarming amount of goals over the last month or so.

It’s now twelve conceded over their last five matches. If Bournemouth can rectify some of these defensive deficiencies, they will have solid claims of challenging for European football come May.

📔 Sunderland v Bournemouth Formation & Team News

While Sunderland typically lined up with a four at the back during their Championship campaign and subsequent start to the Premier League campaign, Regis Le Bris has been utilising a 5-4-1 formation at the moment; there’s a focus on defensive discipline out of possession.

His Sunderland team looks to transition quickly when winning the ball and dispossessing the opposition. There are some interesting tactical approaches on the pitch, with the wingers often holding their width, while the wing-backs occupy more central areas and make inverted runs while in the possession phase.

Sunderland are missing Ajibola Alese and Habib Diarra through injury, while Leo Fuhr Hjelde and Romaine Mundle are still question marks after long-term injuries.

Bournemouth have been consistent with their utilisation of the 4-2-3-1 formation. Bournemouth are extremely aggressive out of possession and look to suffocate opposition teams and make it difficult for them to play out from the back. The strenuous demands of their tactics require extremely high levels of fitness. Antoine Semenyo is a key source of power and athleticism on the counterattack. He often drives the team forward, functioning as a major creative and goalscoring outlet.

It’s a relatively clean bill of health for Bournemouth, with Ben Doak and Justin Kluivert the only notable absentees.
