📈 Bournemouth v Sunderland Form & Stats

Bournemouth struggled with fatigue in the early parts of the season but are starting to grow in confidence. I also think they struggled to adapt to losing the likes of Kerkez, Zabaryni, Huijsen and Kepa all in one go - meaning that Iraola had to completely rethink his defensive strategy.

Bournemouth look energised again, and have been encouraged by strong performances from their new signings. Bournemouth are now as good as Brighton and Brentford when it comes to identifying and developing talent with Kroupi and Rayan being the latest success stories in Bournemouth’s data driven approach.

Recent form is also promising for Bournemouth with the Cherries unbeaten since their defeat to Arsenal on the 3rd January. They’ve beaten the likes of Liverpool and taken a point off Villa in this run, so there are plenty of reasons for Iraola and Bournemouth to be optimistic ahead of the visit of Regis Le Bris’ side.

Sunderland peaked in the first half of the season and I think we’re starting to see the Sunderland that many expected to see this season. One of the main reasons for their recent drop off in form has been the absence of Granit Xhaka who is easily the Black Cats’ most influential player. He is set to return soon, and Sunderland definitely need him with the club losing each of their last three Premier League matches.

It may be a bit harsh to judge Sunderland from this run as they have taken on Liverpool and Arsenal in this period, but their defeat against Fulham last time out was a little concerning and suggests that sides are starting to find formulas to work against the pragmatic approach of Regis Le Bris.

Sunderland’s away form has been shaky all season, their best performances have definitely come at the Stadium of Light and they’ve only managed to win two of their 13 games on the road - conceding 20 goals in the process. They did manage to beat Bournemouth in the initial league meeting between the sides, running out 3-2 winners in that clash.

📔 Bournemouth v Sunderland Formation & Team News

Bournemouth will set up in a 4-2-3-1 shape, with a focus on being as intense as possible when without the ball. This often manifests in as many as five Bournemouth players being sent to hunt down the ball in the opposition's half, leaving the Cherries slightly exposed but offering them a direct route to the goal if they do manage to pinch the ball back.

Sunderland will set up in a 4-1-4-1 or in a 5-4-1, depending on how Regis Le Bris wants to approach the game. I think he may go with a five at the back here in an attempt to neutralise the effect of the Bournemouth press. Sunderland are a top counter attacking side, and they will have space to get in behind Bournemouth here with their common approach under Regis Le Bris this season.

When it comes to absences, Granit Xhaka is nearing a return to fitness but may not quite make the cut to start here. Xhaka should feature on the bench, and I’d expect him to come on if Sunderland are struggling - Sunderland are a completely different team when Xhaka plays.
