Optimism will surround this fixture at the Stadium of Light following opening day wins for both clubs.
Neither fanbase will need much encouragement to start getting excited, but, with Sunderland under new management with Regis Le Bris, and Sheffield Wednesday starting a season under coaching wonderkid Danny Rohl for the first time, there was already a general feeling of optimism pre-season.
Sheffield Wednesday, in particular, had a rousing beginning to the season. They punished Plymouth 4-0 and got off 30 shots in the process. While this match is certainly going to be a few degrees tougher than that encounter, there is no reason for the Owls to fear coming to Sunderland. Confidence will be coursing through the squad, and Rohl is clearly a talented manager, who can organise the team to counter the threats that Sunderland can pose.
Chief among those threats is Jack Clarke, who remains at the Stadium of Light for the time being, and notched another goal in the 2-0 away win at Cardiff on opening day. He is by far Sunderland’s most potent weapon and someone that Wednesday will need to shut down to improve their chances of taking something from the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland’s home form hasn’t been as good as one might expect in the last couple of seasons, so Le Bris will know how important it is to get the season off and running in a positive manner in the North East.

Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday Best Bets
➡️ Sheffield Wednesday double chance @ 1.62 with Paddy Power
➡️ Sheffield Wednesday draw no bet @ 2.25 with Paddy Power
There is some serious momentum about Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl at the moment. Taking the end of last season into account, they have won five matches in a row and are eight unbeaten.
One of those was the win at the Stadium of Light on the final day of last season, so there will be some good recent memories to call on for the Wednesday squad. Indeed, even though Sunderland themselves won their opening match, there is something more convincing about Wednesday at the moment.
While backing a Wednesday win might be a bit risky, siding with them in either the draw no bet market at 2.25 or in the double chance market at 1.62 is recommended.

📊 Sunderland Form and Stats
As mentioned above, Sunderland got their Championship season off to a great start with a victory at Cardiff.
A debut was given to experienced midfielder Alan Browne and that seemed to help the organisation of the team. Sunderland were by no means dominant in the game, with Cardiff more than holding their own, and actually dominating possession throughout the match.
This is a tactic to watch out for from Regis Le Bris. It could’ve been a one-off, but Sunderland would usually look to dominate the ball more than they did in Cardiff, this match could be an indication of what we can expect from Le Bris long term.
The EFL Cup defeat to Preston in midweek can be downgraded in importance due to a completely rotated team and a defence with a lot of youth in it.
📊 Sheffield Wednesday Form and Stats
There has rarely been such an impressive start to the season for Owls fans as the one they witnessed at Hillsborough on Sunday when Wednesday rolled Plymouth over to the tune of a 4-0 victory.
While Plymouth were arguably sub-par in their own performance, Wednesday had the ability and tactical balance to be able to put their foot on the Argyle throats and not let up. There was dynamism in attack and very little was given away.
New boys Jamal Lowe, Svante Ingelsson, and Yan Valery, all added something to the performance, and Ingelsson in particular looks to be a great foil for Barry Bannan, still able to control matches and make the difference at 34 years old.
Wednesday followed up this triumph by rotating their squad, but still managing to take a win away in the EFL Cup at Hull. Even though the team was fully rotated, so there probably isn’t much bearing on the XI for this match, the victory maintains the confidence and goodwill around the club.
⚔️ Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday Head-to-Head
There is no clear steer from recent meetings between the sides, except perhaps that the home side hasn’t been very successful of late.
Both meetings last year went to the away side. This exact fixture was actually played on the final day of last season. On that occasion, Sunderland were very much winding down towards the end of the season, in poor form, under a manager that knew that they weren’t going to remain in the job, against a Wednesday side who could still have mathematically been relegated that day.
The motivation was with Wednesday, but they used it well and created three big chances on the day, taking two of them to win with a degree of comfort.
This was in stark contrast to the reverse meeting in September 2023. Wednesday were in the death throes of the ill-fated Xisco Munoz era, and put up little resistance to a team that still looked relatively upwardly mobile under Tony Mowbray. It is fairly incredible to think how much change both teams have been through since this match, but one thing that remains the same is how dangerous Jack Clarke can be, he bagged twice in this match as Sunderland ran out 3-0 winners despite being the away side.
Previous to last season, the teams met in the League One play-offs, with Sunderland edging through by a single goal over two legs, and they would eventually seal promotion back to the Championship in that campaign.
