Luzern v Young Boys
🏟
Thursday 19th May – 7:30PM KO
On July 24th 2021, Luzern and Young Boys kicked off the new Super League season at the swissporarena with a seven-goal thriller that swung wildly in both directions over the course of the ninety minutes. YB led, Luzern were then 3-1 up with half an hour remaining before YB found the late winner and the three points. YB sat at the top of the standings at the end of play that day while Luzern fell to the bottom.
Many twists and turns would follow and as these sides reacquaint for the final time in the 21/22 season, that opening day game still remains very relevant and was a teaser of how the season would turn out for these two. Luzern battled hard, scored goals and often came up short while YB had the undoubted quality of champions, won more than their fair share of games, but were also held back by an inability to keep the goals out.
Luzern didn’t stick to the bottom, they pulled themselves into the play-off spot and have two final games to save themselves from that dreaded two-leg affair. They have won their last three in a row, including a must-win away match with Sion, scoring ten goals and moving within a point of safety. YB confirmed their place in Europe last weekend, but they can still move ahead of Basel into second.
Matches between Luzern and YB are always entertaining. The last eight in a row have finished with both teams scoring and that is the bet here too. YB haven’t kept a clean sheet in fifteen matches, fourteen of which have had goals at both ends. Luzern have found their scoring touch but, as their league position suggests, they struggle to keep the goals out.

Grasshoppers v St Gallen
🏟
Thursday 19th May – 7:30PM KO
It was a case of deja vu for Grasshoppers as they threw away the lead for a second time in three games in Basel last week. Having led the game after a stunning strike by Brayan Riascos, GC were on course for their first win at St. Jakob-Park since the final day of the 2015/16 season until Sebastiano Esposito struck to ensure a share of the spoils. This mirrored events in Lugano two weeks ago and with a home loss to Sion sandwiched in between, GC are now only a point above safety.
FCSG are licking their wounds after suffering a humbling 4-1 final defeat in Bern on Sunday. They can still finish fourth, but their campaign is effectively over after the cup victory for Lugano granted them the final European spot. Still, considering they had won just four games as the league broke off for the winter break, it has been an excellent 2022 for Peter Zeidler’s men.
Grasshoppers have two tough games to finish their season and they absolutely must start picking up points to avoid an immediate return to the second tier. They have only failed to score three times at the Letzigrund this season, but they’ve also failed to keep a clean sheet at all. FCSG will be keen to bounce back from Sunday and have the firepower to keep that record going.

Servette v FC Basel
🏟
Thursday 19th May – 7:30PM KO
It will be a relief for Servette FC to know that there are only two games remaining in the Super League. If there had been any more, it is fair to say they would’ve been starting to panic about being dragged into the mix after four defeats and a draw from their last five games. They aren’t mathematically safe yet, but they’d need the three sides below them to win their remaining matches while also losing another two themselves.
FC Basel are also trundling along to the finish line. They needed a late equaliser from Sebastiano Esposito to avoid defeat to Grasshoppers last Thursday and have won only one of their previous seven in the league. While both second and third allow entry into the same stage of the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2022/23, FCB will be keen to finish in that runners-up spot. It would also mark the first time that they’ve finished ahead of YB since 2017.
These are two teams that are lacking in confidence. SFC management and board seem to be at odds over the future direction of the club in regards to youth development. As for FCB, everyone knows that interim coach Guillermo Abascal will not remain in charge at the end of the season. They have also been severely lacking in the creativity department after injuries to Liam Millar and Valentin Stocker, scoring only one goal in the three games since. For those reasons, I expect a pretty low-scoring match here.

Lausanne v Sion
🏟
Thursday 19th May – 7:30PM KO
Relegated they may be, LS can still have a say on the fate of the other three clubs that could join them in the Challenge League next season by way of the play-offs. They welcome Sion to the Stade de la Tulliere with their visitors from the Valais outside of the danger zone by just a single point.
It was probably to be expected that Sion would undo the hard work they put in during their 1-0 away win over Grasshoppers by losing a crucial home game to Luzern the following week. It was a sequence that more or less sums up their inconsistent season. A win or even a draw in that match would’ve all but secured survival but instead, Sion must win their remaining games to keep their head above water.
Sion have only failed to score twice away from the Tourbillon this season and with this being a must-win match, I can’t see them failing to find the net here. The 2-2 draw for LS in Zurich last week is proof that they haven’t yet downed tools despite their relegation. The exciting Zeki Amdouni is always a threat and they’ll also be buoyed by the return to the squad of sharpshooter Aldin Turkes who has been sidelined since December 2020, so I think they’ll be able to score at home against a Sion team that also only has two clean sheets away all season.
