Competition: World Cup 2026 Qualifiers - Europe

Wales will be hoping to add some momentum to their World Cup Qualifying campaign when they take on Liechtenstein at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday. Craig Bellamy’s side made a good start to the campaign with a 3-1 win over Kazakhstan, but faltered slightly with a 1-1 draw against North Macedonia last time out.

Liechtenstein are far and away the lowest-ranked side in the group (205), which partially explains why they’ve lost both of their opening games in Group J, without even scoring a goal. Liechtenstein’s only victory in recent memory came in a 1-0 win over Hong Kong in a friendly back in October 2024.

This is an important game for Wales seeing as their next match is against the favourites for the group in Belgium. Craig Bellamy’s side could put themselves in a really good position heading into that game with a win here.

Liechtenstein are the lowest ranked side in the group (205) and their opening two games in the group reflect that ranking. They’ve lost both games, without even scoring a goal - conceding five goals across these matches. This will encourage a Wales side that have been free scoring under Craig Bellamy, already putting three past Kazakhstan in their only home game of qualifying so far.

Liechtenstein conceded three goals to the infamous minnows San Marino a few games back and have now lost four matches in a row, failing to score in three of these - the aggregate scoreline over these four matches is 10-1. They face a tougher task here than they have in these matches (v Kazakhstan, San Marino, Malta, North Macedonia), look for Wales to win comfortably here.

🔴 Brennan Johnson

Brennan Johnson is yet to contribute during the World Cup Qualifying campaign, but should get an opportunity here to get on the scoresheet against the lowest-ranked side in the group, a side that has conceded five goals across their opening two WCQ matches.

Johnson scored two goals across four starts during Wales’ Nations League campaign. He’s an important part of the Welsh frontline and occasionally plays through the middle for Craig Bellamy’s side, which would aid this selection. Johnson comes into these qualifiers on the back of his best scoring season in the top flight, scoring 18 goals for Tottenham across 51 appearances in all competitions.

📊 Wales v Liechtenstein Form and Tactics

Wales have become a more exciting and impressive side under Craig Bellamy. This was highlighted during their Nations League B campaign in which they managed to top their group, edging out Turkey by one point in a group that also featured Iceland and Montenegro.

This will give Wales some much-needed confidence to try and make a push to qualify for the World Cup next summer. They’ll have to win games like this against a Liechtenstein side that are priced at 40/1 to record a victory at the Cardiff City stadium.

Wales lined up in a 5-4-1 shape against North Macedonia last time out in a game that finished 1-1. It’s unlikely that Bellamy opts for the same passive approach here, given the quality advantage they have over Liechtenstein. Wales should line up with an extra midfielder or attacker to make the most of this advantage and perhaps also to boost the goal difference. Liechtenstein have not scored in their opening two games of qualifying.

We can expect Liechtenstein to be on the back foot for the entire game; they only registered 26% possession against North Macedonia in the opening round of fixtures, and this only increased to 30% when they took on Kazakhstan. Across both of these games, Lichtenstein only had eight shots.

Wales will really fancy their chances in this group. Belgium are the heavy hitters, but they are yet to play their first qualifying game, having competed in the Nations League during the first round of fixtures. Wales could see themselves with an early four-point buffer to Belgium if they can pick up all three points here.
