Aston Villa to Win

Aston Villa faced a shock defeat at the hands of Go Ahead Eagles last time out in the Europa League but they should be able to get back on track here. Unai Emery have won both of their other games in the competition against Bologna and Feyenoord. They really should have come away with at least a point from their clash with Go Ahead Eagles with Villa registering an xG of 2.82 from 18 shots on that occasion.

Maccabi Tel Aviv are yet to win their first game in the Europa League, having lost to Dinamo Zagreb and Midtyjjland as well as contesting a 0-0 draw against PAOK in their opening game of the competition. Maccabi conceded three goals in both of those defeats and weren’t able to get any sort of foothold in the game. The same should prove true here with Villa having superior quality when compared to the Maccabi Tel Aviv side.

Over 8.5 Corners

All three of Aston Villa’s matches in the Europa League this season have seen 9+ match corners. Aston Villa have posted high corner totals of eight and 10 corners in their matches against Bologna and Go Ahead Eagles. They can again be a big contributor to a high corner count in this game.

Aston Villa are a strong side from set pieces, you don’t quite see the set piece coaches on the touchline anymore but it has become a crucial part of the game in the Premier League in particular. Aston Villa’s 10 games in the Premier League are seeing 10.30 corners per game with this tally remaining steady (10.20 per game) when looking at their matches at Villa Park.

Maccabi Tel Aviv are likely to contribute to the corner count as well with chances from open play sure to be at a premium. They’ve seen 9+ match corners in two of their three games in the Europa League this term with Maccabi winning at least three corners in all of these matches.

Boubacar Kamara to Commit 1+ Fouls

Kamara is the designated destroyer in this Aston Villa side and has committed nine fouls across his eight appearances in the Premier League this season (1.43 per 90).

He hasn’t quite been as tested in the Europa League so far with just one foul committed across his 203 minutes of action in the competition (0.44 per 90). We can expect this average to rise in line with his league average as the competition progresses with Kamara committing 10 fouls across his 10 appearances in the Champions League last season (1.28 per 90).

He’s set to line up against Dor Peretz who has been one of Maccabi’s better players in their Europa League campaign so far. He’s won six fouls across his eight domestic appearances this season (0.77 per 90) and has been hailed down twice across his 204 minutes of action in the Europa League this season.

Dor Peretz to have 1+ Shots

Peretz is Maccabi Tel Aviv’s most influential player with seven goal contributions across his eight appearances domestically. He’s had 22 shots across those games (2.83 per 90) which is a shot volume that is also filtering through to his Europa League displays.

Peretz has had five shots across his three appearances in the Europa League this season (2.21 per 90). He had at least one shot in both of his games against Midtyjjland and PAOK, the only game in which he failed to have a shot was his 27 minute cameo against Dinamo Zagreb.

Tel Aviv are likely to look for Peretz at every given opportunity seeing as he is the player with the quality to fashion something out of nothing for this Maccabi side. He had 15 shots across his eight appearances in the Europa League last season (2.22 per 90) so his shot rate is pretty consistent at this level.

📈 Aston Villa v Maccabi Tel Aviv Form & Tactics

Aston Villa have hit a small stumbling block after a promising period of form which followed a slow start to the campaign. Recent away defeats against Liverpool and Go Ahead Eagles will have dented the momentum of Villa following a five game winning streak. They did manage to register a 1-0 win over Manchester City between their defeats at the hands of Go Ahead Eagles and Liverpool so Villa are still a threatening side at home.

Villa looked to suffer from complacency in the early stages of the season with the squad requiring a few public dressing downs by Unai Emery before they started to click into gear. Villa are particularly dominant in this competition, as are most of the Premier League sides, with the natural advantage in quality and depth they have in the squad.

Maccabi Tel Aviv are yet to win a game in the Europa League having lost two and drawn one of their matches so far. They’re doing a lot better domestically with Maccabi sitting second in the table, just one point behind league leaders Hapoel. This doesn’t count for much in the Europa League, and illustrates how far behind they are when compared to the more established sides in the competition.

Maccabi have conceded six goals across their three games in the Europa League this season so Villa could come out healthy victors here if Maccabi collapse in a similar manner to that of their last few games in the Europa League, where they conceded 3+ goals in matches against Midtyjjland and Dinamo Zagreb.

📔 Aston Villa v Maccabi Tel Aviv Formation & Team News

Aston Villa should continue with their 4-2-3-1 shape which appears as a 4-2-2-2 when Villa have the ball. This structure involves the wingers tucking in to act as number 10s, with width offered by the fullbacks. We’ve recently seen how effective Matty Cash in particular can be for Villa when getting forward with his excellent goal against Manchester City.

Villa also like to build out from the back, this part of their structure has been harmed by the absence of Youri Tielemans who remains sidelined for this encounter. Villa are also expected to be without Emi Buendia which is a blow as he had started to find some form following a promising pre-season campaign for Villa.

Maccabi Tel Aviv are set to line up in 4-2-3-1 which is the shape they’ve used for all three of their Europa League matches this season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this become a 4-4-2 or a really fierce low block with the issues that Maccabi have faced in the Europa League in recent matches.
