Atletico Madrid to Win

A stuttering start to the new campaign had Diego Simeone’s men winless in their three games before the international break. After spending big in the summer, it was not the start they would have hoped for, but they have since been able to bounce back strongly.

In their last five games, Atleti have won three, while their only loss came in a difficult game at Anfield in the Champions League. Even still, Los Rojiblancos fought back valiantly after trailing by two goals just six minutes in, but eventually succumbed to an injury-time winner from Virgil van Dijk.

Atletico Madrid lost just one game on home turf in La Liga last season, while also winning four of their five matches in the Champions League. The Metropolitano can be a daunting place for visitors, and that was perfectly highlighted last time out. Atletico Madrid prevailed 5-2 in the Madrid derby at the weekend, obliterating Xabi Alonso’s perfect league record.

Both Teams to Score

Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth started in a strike partnership for the first time since August in that game, and it was a decision which paid dividends. The Argentine netted a masterful brace, one goal from the penalty spot, and the other from a free-kick, while Sorloth also found the back of the net. Antoine Griezmann managed to break his barren run with a goal in injury time, which should work to provide him with some much needed confidence. Atletico Madrid look a strong side going forward, and have scored in every game this season.

But Frankfurt have been even more impressive, and they found themselves 6-0 up against Monchengladbach at the weekend after just 47 minutes. Although they did take their foot off the gas, allowing the hosts to almost pull off an incredible comeback, Frankfurt have scored an eye-catching 27 goals from their seven matches in all competitions this term - averaging 3.8 goals scored per game.

Ansgar Knauff to have 1+ Shots

Ansgar Knauff accounted for one of those goals against Monchengladbach, taking just 15 minutes to open his account. The 23-year-old made just his second start of the season at the weekend, scoring his third goal of the campaign. He did also manage to score against Galatasaray in round one of the Champions League, registering a total of four shots with two on target.

Knauff has looked electric when he has played this season, and his average of 4.3 shots per 90 in all competitions is the highest in the Frankfurt squad. Considering he has scored in both games he has started this term, there is every reason to expect Knauff to get the nod on the left-wing midweek.

Atletico are a tough matchup, but they have shown a vulnerability defensively so far, and Knauff will hopefully be the man to exploit that.

Marcos Llorente to Commit 1+ Fouls

Marcos Llorente has been perhaps the most consistent performer under Diego Simeone this season, as has played every available minute. The Spaniard really showed his class against Liverpool, scoring a brace as Atleti mounted an unlikely comeback.

That came as even more of a surprise given that Llorente has been operating at right-back this season, and the positional change has brought about a lot more defensive responsibility. Llorente had an average of 0.82 fouls per 90 in all competitions last season, but that has risen significantly to 1.25 fouls per 90 this term.

In fact, Llorente has registered an infringement in seven out of eight matches in all competitions so far, only failing against Liverpool. Already with two bookings to his name this campaign, Llorente is still adapting to his new role, and will be up against Ansgar Knauff who has drawn an average of 1.84 fouls per 90 this term.

📈 Atletico Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt Form & Tactics

Prior to last weekend, Real Madrid had conceded just three goals from their six league matches, boasting a flawless record of six wins from six. Xabi Alonso’s men had so far looked imperious, but they were humbled after making the short trip to the Metropolitano, losing 5-2.

Atletico Madrid managed just 13 shots, but they were worth 2.31 xG, as the hosts were able to cut through Real Madrid at will and carve out some fantastic chances. Sorloth was physically dominant against the Los Blancos centre-back pairing, while Atletico were aggressive in midfield. Real Madrid were restricted to just six shots, worth a measly 0.58 xG.

Frankfurt were also involved in a thriller at the weekend, as they were absolutely cruising at one stage, going into the break five goals up. But they almost somehow allowed the hosts back into the game - Monchengladbach scored three goals within a ten-minute spell, and the visitors had to resort to wasting time late on.

Still, Frankfurt come into this match in good form, sitting fourth in the Bundesliga with nine points from their opening five matches. Only Bayern Munich have scored more goals than the Eagles this term, who have looked impressive going forward, but the same cannot be said for their defence. With 13 league goals conceded, only Werder Bremen have been more permeable in the Bundesliga.

📔 Atletico Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt Formation & Team News

After suffering a muscle injury just after the international break, Nathaniel Brown has been given the opportunity to start at left back, as Arthur Theate has shifted into centre back, and Nnamdi Collins into right back. Dino Toppomoller is likely to stick with a similar defensive setup on Tuesday night.

Ellyes Skhiri made his first start of the season at the weekend, and is in contention to retain his place in the midfield double pivot after playing the full 90 minutes. Having scored in each of his last six matches in all competitions, Can Uzun is almost certain to start in an advanced midfield position, and is a player to keep tabs on.

Julian Alvarez was absent at Anfield due to injury, but looks set to make his first Champions League start of the season after his excellent performance in the Madrid derby. Diego Simeone has a deep squad of players to choose from, so we could see some rotation midweek.

Conor Gallagher will be pushing for his fourth start of the season, while Alex Baena will also be hoping for some minutes, having recovered from injury to make a brief appearance off the bench against Real Madrid.
