Austria and France most recently butted heads in the Nations League back in 2022. Austria managed a 1-1 draw in Vienna – denied the full three points by a late Mbappe equaliser. In Paris, however, the French were dominant. They cruised to a 2-0 victory, without conceding a single shot on target. 

Ralf Ragnick has managed 22 games for Austria in his short tenure, having assumed responsibility for the international outfit in June 2022 – at the start of the aforementioned Nations League competition. Since then, Austria have been shut out just twice, at the hands of France, and against Denmark in the previous game. In the proceeding 16 games across Euro qualifiers and international friendlies, Austria have scored in every single game. That includes games against Belgium (twice), Germany and Italy.

Zooming into the recent June friendlies, Austria managed a one-all stalemate against Switzerland, and a 2-1 win against Serbia. Those results were surprisingly positive, given the level of rotation for Austria. Marcel Sabitzer didn’t feature in either game, while Ragnick completely changed his back four and goalkeeper for both games. Austria coped well without captain David Alaba and Xaver Schlager – both of whom will miss Euro 2024 with ACL injuries. 

After failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, this will be the appearance for Austria at a major international competition since Euro 2020. They managed to qualify to the round of 16, before being eliminated at the hands of eventual-winners Italy on penalties. It’s a tougher group for Austria, but they will certainly be looking to better their achievements last campaign – optimism should be high under Ralf Ragnick.

📊 France Form and Stats

In their final friendly before Euro 2024 commences, France were held to a goalless draw against Canada. Les Bleus might consider themselves unlucky, considering they amassed 1.27 xGF to just 0.4 xGA, but they were without talisman Kylian Mbappe. In the game prior to that, the captain registered two assists and a goal against Luxembourg – his unsurmounted importance to the success of France goes without saying. 

Following their World Cup win in 2018, France were eliminated in the round of 16 at Euro 2020 – dumped out on penalties by Switzerland. The World Cup in 2022 furthered French disappointment, after a heartbreaking loss in the final. Recent failures should only add fuel to the fire, and act as added motivation for Deschamps to deliver silverware back to Paris.
