📈 RB Leipzig v Bayern Munich Form & Tactics

RB Leipzig’s match against St Pauli was postponed last weekend, meaning they had an additional week of rest before facing Freiburg. That made it close to four weeks without a competitive match for the Red Bulls, but they looked sharp midweek. Ole Werner’s men cruised to a 2-0 win on home turf, with goals from Romulo and Willi Orban.

That scoreline didn’t do them much justice, as Leipzig accumulated 21 shots and three big chances worth 2.48 xG. In return, the visitors mustered up just three shots worth 0.17 xG. After a shaky start to the season, Leipzig are sitting comfortable in third, four points behind Dortmund but the Red Bulls have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Bayern have looked imperious this season, and have won 15 of their 17 league matches. The Bavarians also looked great on their return from the Christmas break, as they put eight goals past Wolfsburg in a dominant victory at the Allianz. There were plenty of stellar performances in that game, but Michael Olise was the standout - he registered two goals and an assist, and picked up the player of the match award.

📔 RB Leipzig v Bayern Munich Formation & Team News

The only negative from that game was that Josip Stanisic suffered an ankle injury in the dying embers, which will keep him out of this clash. He joins Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala in the treatment room, while Nicolas Jackson is also unavailable after Senegal qualified for the AFCON final. Lennart Karl could replace Serge Gnabry in the starting eleven this weekend, while Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlovic should partner up in midfield. Hiroki Ito featured at left back midweek, but could drop out for Raphael Guerreiro here.

After recovering from injury, Romulo has returned to the starting eleven for Leipzig in place of Conrad Harder, and could be joined by Yan Diomande and Antonion Nusa on the flanks. Nicolas Siewald and Xaver Schlager have been a familiar duo in midfield this season, with Christoph Baumgartner operating in a more advanced role in the middle of the park. Leipzig skipper David Raum will be tested at right back against Olise this weekend, which is a matchup to keep an eye on.
