📂 Charlton v Chelsea Cheat Sheet
📈 Charlton v Chelsea Form & Stats
Charlton sit 19th in the Championship and are only five points from safety as they welcome Chelsea for this FA Cup clash. They have offered some resistance at home in the second division this season, with Nathan Jones’ side avoiding defeat in eight of their 11 home matches, though they have only scored 13 goals across these games, which may prove problematic against a side with the quality of Chelsea.
Recent form hasn’t been great for the Addicks either, with just one win from their last five matches in the Championship, though they have drawn their last two games - one of which was against league leaders Coventry. We can expect Charlton to be stubborn here and get the odd flurry forward or opportunity from set pieces.
Charlton should look to be direct here. Chelsea really struggle when the game becomes vertical and have already shown vulnerability at the back against the likes of Lincoln and Cardiff this season, with both lower league sides managing to score against the Blues.
Liam Rosenior has been drafted in as Chelsea’s latest coach, and has a potentially awkward start here with the fanbase on the verge of real frustration, having lost Enzo Maresca and failed to win any of their last five matches across all competitions. It’s a tough time to join the club from Rosenior’s perspective, and it’s imperative that he gets off to a good start with the Blues facing Arsenal in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final next.
📔 Charlton v Chelsea Formation & Team News
Charlton have a few players sidelined for this clash, including Kayne Ramsay, Onel Hernandez, and Reece Burke. They’re expected to line up in a 3-1-4-2 shape with Nathan Jones focusing on keeping Charlton secure at the back. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw one of Charlton’s more advanced midfielders drop back to partner Conor Coventry here, as Chelsea often look to control games through the midfield.
The advantage of Charlton’s system is that they will have two men in forward areas whom they can aim for as outlets. Chelsea will commit bodies forward, and are vulnerable to long balls in behind their high defensive line, which is where Charlie Kelman and Miles Leaburn can get a bit of joy here.
It’s not entirely clear what system and setup Liam Rosenior will use for his first game in charge as Chelsea boss, but I think we’ll see him stick to a lot of Maresca’s principles in the early stages.
Like Maresca, Rosenior likes his side to build with three players, and encourages his side to attack through the wings. One key difference between the coaches is that Rosenior likes to use wingbacks, while Maresca was against having overlapping players and focused on platforming the wingers.
