I don’t think that this will be a walk in the park for Chelsea, but they should have the attacking quality and depth to get over the line here. Charlton have only scored 25 goals across their 25 matches in the Championship this season, so creating and taking chances consistently has been a problem for the home side.

Charlton could get on the scoresheet, but I don't think they'll get anything else from the tie. Chelsea need a win, having failed to win any of their last five matches across all competitions, and require a confidence boost ahead of what could be a testing two-legged tie against Arsenal in the EFL Cup.

I think we’ll see this tie take on a similar feel to Chelsea’s other games against lower league opposition. They conceded 26 shots across these fixtures, but still managed to win both games - showing that the quality of Chelsea usually shines through against lower league opposition.

Chelsea’s petulance was on show again in their 2-1 defeat to Fulham last time out. Marc Cucurella was deservedly sent off for dragging down Wilson when last man, but the reaction of the Chelsea players is what will concern Rosenior ahead of his first game in charge.

Following that red card, Fernandez, Tosin and Palmer were all booked in a three minute flurry of cautions for the Blues. This could be down to poor officiating, but looking at Chelsea’s card numbers throughout the season would suggest that this is a longstanding issue for the Blues.

Chelsea have picked up 47 yellow cards and five red cards across their 21 Premier League matches (2.47 per game). Only three sides have picked up more yellow cards in the Premier League than Chelsea, with the Blues sitting top of the red card chart.

Chelsea picked up a card in a recent EFL Cup quarter-final against Cardiff, and were shown four cards in their 2-1 win over Lincoln earlier in the competition. The Blues still retain their petulant nature when going up against weaker opposition - 2+ Chelsea cards is also worth considering at 2.2.

Chelsea have looked far from secure at the back in recent weeks, and this being Liam Rosenior’s first game in charge could further complicate matters. Rosenior likes to play with a bold system, and although he won’t have had time to get this fully across to the players, I think we’ll start seeing glimpses of his intended approach here.

This is a free hit for Charlton, and they should take inspiration from the lower league sides that have caused the Blues problems so far already this season. Cardiff managed to have 10 shots and four on target in their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea in the EFL Cup, while the Blues shipped 16 shots against Lincoln in an earlier EFL Cup clash (which Chelsea also won).

Liam Rosenior has quite a tough start to his Chelsea career, with the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final against Arsenal to follow this game. Chelsea have struggled with long and direct play all season, so this is the most likely approach from Charlton in this clash. The home side don’t have the strongest attacking numbers in the Championship this term, but are still averaging 3.60 shots on target per game.

Amari'i Bell usually lines up on the left side of a back three for Charlton, which is a role that gives him licence to step into more advanced areas. He’s been hauled down 25 times across his 18 appearances in the Championship this term (1.59 per 90).

This is an incredibly promising foul win average for a centre back, and shows that winning fouls is a key part of Bell’s overall game. His numbers are consistent too, he averaged 1.26 fouls won per 90 across his 31 appearances in the Championship last term.

His role in a back three for Charlton should see him have a variety of opponents, but the most appealing to bring him down is Liam Delap. The striker is incredibly aggressive, and will look to put the Charlton back three under constant pressure. Delap has committed 12 fouls across just eight starts in the Premier League this term (1.87 per 90).
