Crystal Palace travel to take on Macclesfield in the FA Cup, with the Eagles without a win across their last eight matches across all competitions.
It is expected to be a routine progression to the next round for Oliver Glasner’s side, who have the added pressure of defending their FA Cup crown.

📈 Macclesfield v Crystal Palace Form & Stats
Macclesfield have struggled since relegation from League Two in the 2019/20 season, but are on the climb back and currently sit in mid table in the National League North. Their home form has been solid in this division, with the club avoiding defeat in nine of their 12 matches. This is obviously a completely different challenge for the National League side, but one they are likely to enjoy and play without much fear.
Their main danger man is Danny Elliot who has netted 11 goals across his 20 appearances in the National League North this term. He’s one of Macclesfield’s only real goal threats, with the next top scorer in the squad only having four goals to their name. When it comes to recent form, Macclesfield have won three of their last five matches across all competitions - they ran out 2-1 winners against Radcliffe last time out.
Crystal Palace desperately need a win to turn the tide on their season, which looks to be spiralling a little. It was at this stage of last season when the Eagles started to click into gear under Glasner, an improvement which was marked by their run in the FA Cup to win the trophy last season. Palace have added a few players to their squad already in the transfer window, with Brennan Johnson coming in to bolster Glasner’s forward options.
Palace can be a little too safe and structured in their approach at times, which harms them in the final third. Glasner should encourage his side to get after Macclesfield here, as Palace are much the better side and can wrap this up quickly with the quality of players at their disposal. It’ll be interesting to see how much Glasner rotates here, as this is an important game for the Eagles in the context of their recent poor form.
📔 Macclesfield v Crystal Palace Formation & Team News
Macclesfield usually line up in a 4-2-3-1 shape, but I’d expect that to change to a variation of five at the back here given the quality that they are up against. The main game plan for the home side should be to try and frustrate Palace as much as possible, knowing that their confidence may be low as a result of recent form, and then look for opportunities through transitions and set pieces to try and get something from the game.
It’ll be tough for Macclesfield to keep out Palace for the entire 90 minutes, so it’s important that they have some sort of outlet that they can look for to relieve pressure. If the game does end up being wave after wave of Palace attacks, then it’s difficult to see where the home side will get much joy in this clash.
Crystal Palace should continue in their 3-4-3 shape which is fantastic for their defensive shape and structure, but less effective when it comes to the Eagles being a force in the final third. Palace have only scored 22 goals in the Premier League this season - only Nottingham Forest (21) and Wolves (15) have scored fewer goals in the top flight.
This shouldn’t be too much of an issue here, as the individual quality of Palace’s players should be able to see them over the line.
