Fuelled by a passion for sport and a sharp instinct for uncovering patterns in data, beating the bookies became the perfect outlet for my competitive streak. Now I take pleasure in sharing my finds with ABC punters. I enjoy finding niche angles and betting value in a range of markets and leagues, my favourite being in Serie A.

In this article...

As Crystal Palace look to extend their unbeaten start against the visiting Sunderland, I’ll run you through how this game might play out, alongside a couple of bets I like the look of.

Crystal Palace to Win

Crystal Palace have gotten off to a strong start this season, recording a win and two draws, and in doing so remaining one of only three unbeaten teams in the Premier League. What makes that return even more notable is the calibre of opposition they’ve been up against; all three fixtures came against last season’s top seven (Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa).

In my view, they’re pretty good value for their position, and with the home advantage, should claim all three points against Sunderland.

Sunderland’s 6 points look good on paper, however the underlying figures suggest this may flatter them. The Black Cats have generated a mere 0.43xG /90 from open play, and have come up against significantly weaker opposition in West Ham, Burnley, and Brentford - all bottom-seven sides.

Reinildo Mandava to be Fouled 2+ Times

Backing Reinildo to win 2 or more fouls looks to be a fantastic angle, given the left-backs style of play, and his matchup with Pino.

The tricky full-back has drawn 7 fouls across his 3 matches, including 4 last time out against Brentford. He maintained a similar record in La Liga, where he averaged 1.73 won per 90 for Atletico last season.

Yermei Pino is likely to start on the right of Crystal Palace’s attack given Sarr’s injury, which adds further value to this selection. The young Spaniard has averaged 2.5 fouls per 90 this season, including matches across both La Liga and the Premier League.

This is in keeping with his rate of 2.26 per 90 last season for Villarael and the ludicrous 4.13/90 he managed the season before (over 5.3 90’s).

  • Crystal Palace remain unbeaten after three games, picking up 5 points against last season’s top seven.

  • Sunderland have 6 points on the board after beating Brentford last time out, courtesy of a 96th-minute Wilson Isidor winner.

  • This is the first clash between these sides since 2017; however, six of their eight Premier League meetings back then produced 4 or more goals.

🔵 Unbeaten Run Sparks Optimism for Palace

Crystal Palace have plenty of reasons for optimism after collecting 5 points from their opening three games. Glasner’s side have already shown a variety of dimensions to their game - digging deep to hold off Chelsea, standing firm against Forest, and then blowing Aston Villa away in style.

That 3-0 win at Villa Park was particularly eye-catching. Despite seeing just 42% of the ball and attempting only 6 shots, the Eagles carved out 4 big chances and racked up an impressive 2.65xG.

Perhaps equally significant is that they managed to do it without Eberechi Eze, following his move to Arsenal. The big question now is how they’ll adapt long term without their former talisman.

🔴 Sunderland’s Promising Points Return Masks Attacking Concerns

After a significant summer outlay, all eyes were on Sunderland, and on the surface, the investment looks to be paying off. Six points from their first three games has given them a solid platform, though it’s worth noting that the fixture list has been kind to them.

The main worry remains in attack. As mentioned earlier, Regis Le Bris’s side have averaged just 0.43xG per 90 from open play so far this season.

Defensively, though, there’s much more encouragement - Sunderland have limited their opponents to just one goal and 0.66xG per game, which is undoubtedly an impressive feat for a newly promoted outfit.

📊 Crystal Palace v Sunderland H2H

Given that Sunderland were playing Championship and even League One football until recently, there’s not a boatload of head-to-head information to share with you here.

Sunderland’s last meeting with Crystal Palace was way back in 2017, although it’s not one the fans are likely to forget. On that occasion, they thumped Palace 4-0 at Selhurst Park, with Jermain Defoe scoring a brace and winning man-of-the-match.

Interestingly, of the 8 Premier League showings of this fixture, 6 have produced 4+ goals. Let’s hope the pair can pick up where they left off almost 10 years ago!
