Curacao will be one of four nations making their debut at the 2026 World Cup. The Blue Stars only joined FIFA in 2011, making their rise to football’s biggest stage in just 15 years a remarkable achievement. However, Curacao’s first taste of the tournament is unlikely to come easy, with a daunting group featuring Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast awaiting them.

🌍 How did Curacao qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

An unbeaten campaign in CONCACAF qualifying saw Curacao secure a place at the World Cup for the first time in their history. In doing so, the Blue Stars became the smallest nation ever to qualify for football’s global showpiece. Under the stewardship of veteran boss Dick Advocaat, Curacao made light work of Barbados, Aruba, Saint Lucia and Haiti in the second round, finding the net 15 times along the way.

They carried that form into the third round, where the group looked more demanding on paper, but Curacao continued to deliver. A 2-0 home win over Jamaica proved pivotal, helping to tilt the balance in their favour and ultimately edge them above the Reggae Boyz in the standings.

👔 Who is the Curacao manager at the 2026 World Cup?

Two milestones will be set at once as Curacao make their first-ever World Cup appearance and Dick Advocaat becomes the oldest manager in the tournament’s history. However, the second of those did not look like it would materialise after the Dutchman stepped down in February due to a personal matter involving his daughter’s health. Fred Rutten came in as his replacement, but has since departed to make way for Advocaat’s return.

Advocaat has managed a host of international sides throughout his career, but this will only be his third World Cup appearance, having previously led the Netherlands and South Korea.

🔎 Who are Curacao's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Leandro Bacuna

Leandro Bacuna is the heartbeat of the team. Comfortable in midfield or at full back, Bacuna is the most experienced player in the Curacao squad and wears the armband with real authority. His years in the Premier League and the Eredivisie provide a level of top-flight pedigree that is sparse within a relatively inexperienced squad, which will make his leadership crucial on a stage of this size. Bacuna’s importance is further underlined by the fact that he has 22 goal involvements across his 68 caps for Curacao. The 34-year-old now plays in the Turkish second tier for Igdir.

Juninho Bacuna

While his brother Leandro provides the experience and leadership, Juninho brings the spark. He is the more explosive of the two and has become a key player for Curacao in recent years. That is reflected in the fact that 10 of Bacuna’s 22 international goals have come across his last 23 appearances.

A central midfielder by trade, the younger Bacuna brother is often deployed in a false nine role for his country, a position he has carried out to great effect under Dick Advocaat’s guidance. The 28-year-old now plays for Gaziantep in the Turkish Super Lig.

Eloy Room

Eloy Room is likely to be Curacao’s first-choice goalkeeper and will almost certainly be kept busy throughout Group E. He made his Curacao debut in 2015 and, more than a decade later, remains the undisputed number one and one of the squad’s most experienced figures.

A clean sheet away to Jamaica in November went a long way towards confirming Curacao’s World Cup dream.

Room’s shot-stopping ability and international pedigree will be key if the Blue Stars are to remain competitive in what promises to be a testing set of fixtures. The 37-year-old plays for Miami FC in the USL Championship.

Curacao are the joint-biggest price to win the competition, at 500/1 on Paddy Power.

No. It's a great achievement to reach the event as such a young nation. But avoiding bottom of the group will be hard enough, let alone upsetting a side or winning some knockout games.

It's a tough draw for Curacao in Group E. They face Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
