A hugely exciting fixture for League 2 Grimsby as they take on Premier League Brentford at Blundell Park. It’s been a thrilling cup run for the hosts.

After dismantling Man Utd on home turf and winning via a marathon penalty shootout, they overcame Sheffield Wednesday in the last round to book their place in the last 16 of the competition. Brentford will be hoping to avoid a banana skin result and book their place in the quarter-final.

Brentford to Win

Much will probably depend on the Brentford lineup for this contest, but with the prospect of a League Cup quarter-final on the horizon, there’s an incentive to play a strong XI and be super switched on during the game. If Grimsby had a better defensive record, I might be a bit more hesitant here. However, they do concede goals. Brentford will be wary of Grimsby’s dismantling of Man Utd, and the element of surprise may have evaporated.

Brentford faced Premier League opposition in both of their previous rounds in the competition, while this may have influenced their team selection somewhat, it was still a team with a lot of fringe players and plenty of Premier League experience. I would expect something similar on Tuesday night.

Confidence should be super high in the Brentford camp; after absolutely outplaying West Ham at the London Stadium, then deservedly beating Liverpool 3-2 on Saturday night, the players should be in a buoyant mood.

If Brentford are confident of avoiding the drop and securing a mid-table finish in the Premier League, there’s plenty of incentive to take a domestic cup run seriously. This Brentford side should have too much quality for their opposition; they’re a very streetwise team and probably won’t underestimate the awkward assignment at hand.

Over 2.5 Grimsby Corners

A feature of Grimsby’s success against Man Utd was their super-aggressive press off the ball; United kept losing possession cheaply, and the hosts were there to capitalise. Grimsby managed to keep United boxed in for long periods of the first half, and this enabled them to rack up four corners before the break. The home side also average 6.30 corners per game in League Two, so are a team that rely on set pieces.

Now, admittedly, Brentford will probably be smarter than United were in that sense, but with a ferocious home crowd roaring them on and the TV cameras present, the hosts may get some sporadic spells of territory.

It’s not quite clear what Brentford XI will take to the pitch, but a weaker XI will pose a much bigger advantage for the selection. There’s also a high likelihood that Grimsby will be chasing the game, and this opens up the possibility of seeing corners for the hosts, especially if Brentford go ahead early doors.

📈 Grimsby v Brentford Form & Stats

It’s been a strong start to the League Two campaign for Grimsby; they currently sit 6th in the league after bagging 24 points from fourteen games, just a slender two points behind league leaders Walsall.

There’s an argument for suggesting Grimsby might be top of the league if they didn’t have a League Cup distraction; unsurprisingly, they experienced defeats straight after toppling Man Utd and Sheffield Wednesday. Grimsby’s overall record is seven wins, three draws, and four defeats.

The underlying data serves Grimsby well and suggests they are arguably the strongest team in the division; their xPOS in League Two is 1st, with the next best team 2.0 points behind them.

Many pundits were worried about Brentford’s fate after losing some high-profile players and appointing Keith Andrews as their manager. However, despite an initial defeat away to Nottingham Forest, it’s been a workmanlike start to the campaign for Brentford.

Crucially, they’ve shown an ability to win games and produce competitive performances against superior opposition. Brentford currently sit 11th after securing 13 points from their opening nine games. A 3-1 win against Liverpool on Saturday evening was a testament to this.

There won’t be any alarm bells for Brentford; the underlying data suggests they are good value for their 11th position in the league; if anything, they are slightly underperforming on their xGA column.
