Hearts Double Chance @ 1.25

I think Hearts will come out of their Monday night showdown with Aberdeen with a point at the very least. While the Jam Tarts underperformed last season, I suspect that they will be a completely different proposition now that they have Derek McInnes in charge. The capital club showed some encouraging signs during their Scottish League Cup campaign, topping their group with four wins from four. What’s more, new manager McInnes knows what it takes to win at this level, and he appears to have made some eye-catching additions to his squad.

While Aberdeen ended last season with a historic Scottish Cup final triumph, their league form towards the end of the season did not make for great reading. The Dons lost each of their final four Scottish Premiership matches last term. A deeper look shows that Jimmy Thelin’s team have failed to take top honours from five of their last 27 top-flight assignments.

Lawrence Shankland to Score Anytime @ 2.00

A lot of Hearts’ hopes for this season will fall on Lawrence Shankland, who I suspect will be given a new lease of life at the club under Derek McInnes. The Hearts skipper has already shown signs that he is returning to form, hitting three goals across his three appearances in the Scottish League Cup.

While there is no denying that Aberdeen will represent a serious step up in class from the teams that Shankland struck against in the League Cup, the Hearts forward did hit the back of the net against the Dons in a Scottish Cup semi-final tie towards the tail end of last season.

What’s more, Aberdeen were leaky at the back last season, failing to silence their opponents in 30 of their 38 Scottish Premiership matches, shipping 2+ goals in six of their final 10 road trips of the campaign. So with that in mind coupled with the safety net of SBK’s Fresh Legs feature, Shankland looks well worthy of support to get himself on the scoresheet on Monday night.

Over 4.5 Cards @ 2.08

I’m expecting a blood and thunder clash under the Tynecastle lights on Monday night. For no apparent reason, this has been one of the Scottish Premiership’s most fiery fixtures in recent years. Two of the three top-flight meetings between the pair last season featured six yellow cards, with a red card also being flashed in one of those showdowns. Moreover, last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final tie between the two teams was an ill-tempered affair that ended with Hearts two men down at the final whistle.

Even outside of their clashes with Hearts last season, Aberdeen were one of the most ill-disciplined sides in the division, collecting an average of 2.45 cards per game. As for Hearts, they were picking up an average of just under two yellow cards per 90 in the top-flight last term. Therefore, it's likely that referee Nick Walsh will be busy on Monday night, with a minimum of five cards looking well within the realms of possibility.

📈 Hearts v Aberdeen Form & Tactics

As already alluded to, Hearts enjoyed a near-flawless Scottish League Cup group stage campaign, winning each of their four matches with room to spare. Not only did the Jam Tarts rack up a combined total of 16 goals, they also posted three clean sheets, conceding just one goal across their four outings.

With Derek McInnes now at the wheel, I’m expecting Hearts to be a lot more stubborn and difficult to beat this season. The new Jambos boss tends to opt for a 4-4-2 system that has flexibility to transfer into a 4-5-1 formation if necessary. As was the case when McInnes was in charge at Kilmarnock and Aberdeen, expect to see plenty of emphasis on pace and directness in the wide areas, with Hearts’ wingers encouraged to get crosses into the box.

I’m intrigued to see how Aberdeen set up for their opening league game of the season with Hearts on Monday night. For almost the entirety of last season, Jimmy Thelin stuck with his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. However, the Dons boss switched to a 3-5-2 system in May’s Scottish Cup final - a bold move that was labelled a masterstroke as his side went onto claim a famous win over Celtic to lift the trophy for the first time since 1990. Thus, it will be interesting to see which of the two the Swede opts for at Tynecastle.

Regardless of formations, Thelin will be hoping his side’s Scottish Cup triumph can act as a springboard for a strong start to the season. After such a promising start to their campaign 12 months ago, the Dons tailed away dramatically before their Hampden heroics against Celtic.
