Saturday night football in the Scottish Premiership sees Dundee United host leaders Hearts at Tannadice.

Jim Goodwin’s side were idle last weekend after their match with St Mirren was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Hearts, meanwhile, twice came from behind to earn a 2–2 draw against title rivals Celtic at Tynecastle last Sunday.

Derek McInnes’ men remain top of the table, but their lead over 2nd-placed Rangers is down to four points going into the weekend. However, a return to winning ways on Saturday night would stretch that gap to seven, at least temporarily.

📈 Dundee United v Hearts Form & Tactics

It’s been an up-and-down campaign for Dundee United, who begin the weekend in 8th - eight points adrift of 6th-place Falkirk - though they do have a game in hand on the Bairns. Jim Goodwin’s side opened 2026 with back-to-back league defeats, starting with a bruising 1-0 loss at home to arch-rivals Dundee before being swept aside 4-0 away at Celtic. However, the Terrors steadied the ship by seeing off Ayr United 2-0 in the Scottish Cup a fortnight ago.

In contrast to last season, Goodwin’s men have been involved in a number of high-scoring games, with eight of their 22 Premiership fixtures featuring over 3.5 goals - a sample that includes a recent home game with Rangers. It’s also worth mentioning that one of those matches was the last time Hearts visited Tannadice, when Dundee United fell to a last-gasp 3-2 defeat against the capital club.

Hearts saw their three-game winning run in the Scottish Premiership halted with a 2–2 draw against Celtic last weekend. However, manager Derek McInnes won’t have been too downbeat, as his side showed real fighting spirit to twice come from behind and earn what could prove to be a crucial point. The result means just 6 points now separate the top three in the table.

No side in the Scottish top-flight has found the net more than Hearts (44) this season. The visitors conceded 2+ goals in a league match for only the fifth time this season last weekend. It’s worth noting that their latest opponents, Dundee United, are among the few teams to score twice against Hearts this term - doing so when they met at this venue back in August.

Each of Hearts’ last three Scottish Premiership matches have featured a red card.

📔 Dundee United v Hearts Formation & Team News

Jim Goodwin has favoured a three-man defence in recent weeks, usually setting his side up in a 3-4-3 formation. However, the Terrors system resembled more of a 3-5-2 in their recent clash with Celtic, and that could be the case again when league leaders Hearts come to town.

The hosts currently have a relatively clean bill of health, with Isaac Pappoe and Vicko Sevelj the only two players expected to be absent.

Ashley Maynard-Brewer could be handed his Dundee United debut after joining from Charlton earlier this week.

Derek McInnes is expected to line his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation at Tannadice on Saturday night.

As was the case last weekend, the league leaders look set to be without injured players Calem Nieuwenhof, Cammy Devlin, Finlay Pollock, Lawrence Shankland, and Stephen Kingsley.

On top of that, Beni Baningime will miss out as he serves the final game of his suspension following his red card against St Mirren.
