🥉 To Finish in the Top 3 – Gillingham
You can make an argument for plenty and a lot comes down to personal preferences – for example, many footballing purists will be high on MK Dons, their brand of football is easy-on-the-eye and the way the game should be played (or so we’re told).
But we’re looking for faults and what we see is a team on the extreme of the playing style scale and player recruitment that is ultra-targeted. It’s very ‘trust the process’ which is commendable but lacks flexibility. What happens when Plan A is figured out and there’s no Plan B?
For our League Two automatic promotion selection, we’re turning to a team that is adopting a more rudimental approach to their business.
It’s not fancy or intricate but it’s simple and easy to understand. Signing players that have provided the most League Two assists last season (Jack Nolan and Remeao Hutton, the latter in January), have a penalty box presence (Elliot Nevitt & Josh Andrews), and a manager that has recent success in the division (Mark Bonner).
That team is Gillingham, who are priced at 3.75 to secure themselves an automatic promotion place this season, which looks a strong price given the quality of their squad and manager.

7️⃣ To Finish in the Top 7 – MK Dons
So, what does happen when Plan A is figured out and there’s no Plan B? Answer: MK Dons become a bet in the Top 7 finish market.
Finishing 4th last season only to be humiliated by Crawley in the playoffs, Mike Williamson’s MK side deserve respect and although we question their Top 3 credentials, we absolutely don’t see their floor being anywhere near lower than 7th.
Acting from a position of strength they’ve brought in a multitude of players that all make perfect sense on paper. Tom McGill, on loan from Brighton, is a perfectly capable modern day goalkeeper and an upgrade on last season’s glove holders; Michael Kelly and Filip Marschall. Sam Sherring, Luke Offord and Lawrence Maguire are a great mix of central defenders who can play and who can defend.
Liam Kelly joins from the Crawley side that dismantled MK at the end of last season. Tom Carroll comes in to keep the ball, Tommy Leigh adds verve and Callum Hendry replaces the outgoing Max Dean.

7️⃣ To Finish in the Top 7 – Port Vale
Another team that we see as having a high floor and, therefore, a safe bet in this market is Port Vale.
Darren Moore isn’t a flashy manager. He’s not going to go round putting eagles and albatross’ on the card but he will keep double bogeys off it. Going through the League Two season at par should be enough to ensure Vale finish no lower than the play-off places.
The recruitment looks to be spot on. Ben Heneghan, Connor Hall and Sam Hart are all steady signings for the backline. George Byers and Ryan Croasdale come in and offer quality on the ball as well as character and leadership.
The forward players look seriously exciting with experienced Jayden Stockley and Ronan Curtis taking the burden off non-league star Laurent Tolaj, north of the border star Ruari Paton and academy graduate Baylee Dipepa.

⬇️ To Finish Bottom – Morecambe
The relegation market in League Two is always a difficult one to navigate. With only two spots and usually a handful of clubs who are spiralling out of control it’s sometimes a case of just ruling out clubs who don’t look like they should reside in an asylum. There’s not many of them this season. Accrington maybe? But they look like they have some resemblance of a plan – they at least look like they should be difficult to score against.
Grimsby maybe? But David Artell is a top manager for the level and their recruitment is exotic. Colchester should improve for a first full season under Danny Cowley – even if only slightly. Newport are starting to implement a strategy. Bromley could surprise a few. Harrogate are constantly under appreciated.
That leaves Morecambe. Ownership problems meant that you could count the amount of players carried over from last season on one hand. Incomings have since arrived but it’s a mish-mash of players, mostly North-West based free agents from the non-league world.
All Morecambe hopes lie with manager Derek Adams performing miracles, something he is capable of, but it’s not something you can bank on happening.
With how weak Morecambe are, it’s worth taking a bigger price in the to finish bottom market, rather than the best available 3.75 for relegation.

🏆 Top South-West Club – Swindon
A market that looks interesting is the top South-West club market, available with Sky Bet and others. The runners are Cheltenham, Swindon and Newport.
Newport look interesting here because of a clear change in recruitment policy where they are targeting players mainly under the age of 24 and mostly with two-year contracts. The new ownership have gotten their feet under the table quickly with a change of management and clear long term strategy.
However, we don’t foresee a groundbreaking first year of their reign. Patience will be required to allow the young incomings time to find their feet and adapt to the level.
Cheltenham are an intriguing side because January signing Jordan Thomas may prove himself to be one of the best players in the division. He carries the weight of the team on his shoulders – for the first half of the season at least. However, if he’s as good as many think he is he will only be in the division until January and at Cheltenham for only 12 months. He’s just passing through on his way to higher things.
Losing Aidan Keena to St Patrick’s Athletic on League of Ireland transfer deadline day, reportedly with no fee involved, raises alarm bells. With all that in mind, even if Cheltenham start well a second half of the season drop-off is very possible.
Swindon, look like a team that are in for a steady season and many see them flirting with the play-offs and a finishing position that should win this market. Will Wright, Tunmise Sobowale, Rosaire Longelo and Harry Smith are solid League Two signings. Sean McGurk offers top end of the pitch threat and Paul Glatzel looks like his injury issues are behind him and is primed for a good goalscoring season.
The bookies look to have got this market wrong.
