🌍 How did Morocco qualify for the 2026 World Cup?
Morocco had no problems whatsoever during their World Cup qualifying campaign, as they comfortably topped their group with a flawless record of eight wins from eight.
It wasn’t the most competitive group, as Morocco were pitted against Niger, Tanzania, Zambia, and the Congo Republic, but the Atlas Lions were ruthless - they scored 22 goals, and conceded just two in return.
Morocco’s biggest win came against the Congo Republic, as they eased to a 6-0 win. Ayoub El Kaabi bagged himself a hat-trick in that game, and he was the top scorer for his national side in the group with four goals. Morocco had 12 different players get on the scoresheet, which highlights their impressive depth.
👔 Who is the Morocco manager at the World Cup 2026?
Mohamed Ouahbi is the coach who will lead Morocco at this World Cup. At 49 years old, he is known for prioritising the development of young players and, above all, for implementing an attacking style of play in an effort to give the Moroccan national team a new identity. Ouahbi was appointed in March to replace Walid Regragui and previously worked with Morocco’s youth teams (U20 and U23) before taking charge of the senior squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The managerial change came from a desire to alter the team’s playing style, which under Regragui was built around defensive solidity and quick counter-attacks. With a talented squad and confidence boosted by strong recent results, public pressure during the Africa Cup of Nations led to criticism and increased calls for a more dominant side, one capable of dictating play and controlling matches.
🔎 Who are Morocco's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?
Brahim Diaz
Brahim Diaz was guilty of missing a penalty in the AFCON final, but the Real Madrid man had a stellar competition, and he finished as the top scorer with five goals. Diaz has scored 13 goals in 23 appearances for Morocco since switching allegiances from the Spanish national team, and is expected to play another massive role this tournament on the right wing.
Diaz has only scored one goal in 31 appearances for Real Madrid this season, but he really seems to come into his element on the international stage.
Achraf Hakimi
Achraf Hakimi’s involvement at AFCON was under threat after he suffered a significant ankle injury while playing in the Champions League, but the 27-year-old returned at just the right time.
He might be listed as a right back on paper, but Hakimi is given plenty of license to get forward, and could also be on set-piece duties for Morocco. He led the Atlas Lions as captain at AFCON, and in the previous World Cup, so his experience at the top level will be vital once again this summer.
Neil El Aynaoui
Morocco like to push their fullbacks high up the field, but there needs to be a counter-balance to that attacking intent, and Neil El Aynaoui is the man to provide that. Operating in a holding midfield role, El Aynoui has to play a selfless game, often filling in defensively and covering others.
Morocco have a lot of attack-minded players who like to join the attacks, which gives the Roma man a massive role in covering gaps in midfield.
