Group C Preview
Group C at the FIFA World Cup looks to be one of the most intriguing groups at the tournament, with the group featuring Brazil, Scotland, Morocco, and Haiti.
Remarkably, this draw marks the fifth time that Scotland have faced off against Brazil in the group stages, with the last meeting taking place back in 1998.
A lot see this as one of the stronger groups at this year's competition. You have five-time winners Brazil alongside a Morocco team that made history in Qatar, becoming the first African country to reach a World Cup quarter-final.
Scotland are taking part in their first World Cup since 1998 and will be looking to make a mark, alongside a Haitian team playing in their second-ever World Cup.

🇧🇷 Brazil
Carlo Ancelotti leads a fractured Brazil side into the World Cup with the hope being that the experienced and calm coach can change the fortunes of the nation on the footballing stage. Brazil have not lifted the World Cup since 2002, so the spiritual home of football is due a win on the biggest stage.
Their last big triumph came in the 2019 Copa America when they beat Peru in the final after knocking out Argentina in the semi-finals. It is their blue and white rivals who have kicked on since that triumph, with Messi’s men winning the next two Copa Americas and the World Cup.
Brazil are favourites to top the group here at 2/7, though I don’t think I would back them at that price in this tricky group. Brazil finished fifth in qualifying for the World Cup, 10 points below Argentina and with fewer points than the likes of Uruguay, Colombia, and Ecuador. I think Brazil will top the group, but 2/7 isn’t fair to the chances of Morocco and Scotland, who both can cause Brazil issues.
I still don’t think Brazil are in a spot where they can lift their first World Cup since 2022. Carlo Ancelotti is a really great coach, but he’s never been on the international stage before, and while the squad is stacked with talent, I still don’t see much balance or chemistry between the players to suggest that this can be a special year for Brazil.
🇲🇦 Morocco
Morocco will have to pick themselves back up again after a crushing defeat in the final of AFCON to Senegal in the most extraordinary circumstances. Morocco were awarded a controversial penalty in the final minute of the game, which prompted Senegal players and staff to leave the pitch, only for Diaz to miss the penalty through a panenka when Senegal returned to the field.
The West African side then went on to score in extra time to secure the trophy, leaving Morocco broken and a bit directionless ahead of this World Cup. That experience will definitely impact them at the World Cup, but it is worth remembering that Morocco have gone further than any other African country at a World Cup, with the Atlas Lions reaching the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup, bowing out to France.
Talent is abundant in this Moroccan side, which was evident in their run to the AFCON final. Navigating this group will come down to the discipline of the Moroccan players, who will be acutely aware of the embarrassment they suffered the last time that they were on the international stage. I’d expect Morocco’s games to be tense and tight; they are a very pragmatic side, and this has been the basis of their success at recent tournaments.
🏴 Scotland
Scotland enjoyed a brilliant run of features at five successive World Cup tournaments between 1974 and 1990, but have not featured at the tournament since 1998. It’s a historic achievement by Steve Clarke’s side, who have successfully built on reaching the European Championships in 2024.
The extended field of the World Cup this year gives Scotland a decent chance of coming through this group. Brazil and Morocco are favourites to qualify as the top two, but Scotland can sneak through as one of the best third-placed sides if they beat Haiti and find a way to get a point against either Brazil or Morocco. Three points against the minnows of the group may be enough if other results go Scotland’s way, and they don’t get battered by Brazil or Morocco.
Scotland shouldn’t be underestimated here, they beat Denmark to top their qualifying group and reach this tournament for the first time in over 25 years. There is plenty of quality in this Scotland side as well, with the likes of Scott McTominay and John McGinn expected to be on the plane to America. Scotland will find it difficult to go deep, but I do think that they will have a few memorable moments in this group and surprise a few people.
🇭🇹 Haiti
This is only the second time that Haiti have qualified for the World Cup, with their previous appearance coming back in 1974. They’ve been drawn in a very tough group, and it’s hard to see them not coming bottom of Group C, given the standard of opposition that they are facing.
There are a few recognisable players in the Haiti squad expected to feature in America, including Jean Ricner Bellegarde, who will be a familiar name to Wolves and Premier League fans. There are a few other players that compete in Europe, mainly spread around the Netherlands and France, and there are rumours of the Haitian FA trying to secure a few more switches of international allegiance ahead of the World Cup.
Allan Saint Maximin was approached about a potential passport switch but turned down the offer. I wouldn’t be surprised to see other players who have a connection to the nation approached before the squad is announced, as Haiti look to give themselves the best chance of creating a bit of history at the 2026 World Cup.
