Eight years on from their historic debut at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Panama return to football’s biggest stage this summer.
Los Canaleros failed to make it out of the group back then, and there is a real danger of history repeating itself, with a daunting draw placing them alongside Croatia, England, and Ghana in Group L.

🌍 How did Panama qualify for the 2026 World Cup?
Panama secured just a second World Cup appearance as one of CONCACAF’s automatic qualifiers. They eased through the early stages of qualifying, but were made to work far harder in the decisive third round.
In the end, victories over Guatemala and El Salvador across the final two matchdays saw Thomas Christiansen’s side over the line, sealing top spot and confirming their place at this summer’s North American showpiece.
A strong defensive unit served Panama well during qualifying, with five of their seven victories coming alongside a clean sheet. Notably, Los Canaleros went through their qualifying campaign unbeaten, recording seven wins and three draws.
👔 Who is the Panama manager at the World Cup 2026?
Thomas Christiansen built his coaching reputation in Cyprus, winning the league with APOEL, before mixed spells with Leeds and Union SG. That trajectory ultimately led to his appointment as Panama boss in 2020, and he has since guided them to this summer’s World Cup, the biggest achievement of his tenure so far.
Christiansen’s approach is pragmatic and safety-first, and that will understandably be his blueprint this summer, given the calibre of opposition Panama have been drawn alongside in Group L.
🔎 Who are Panama's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?
Adalberto Carrasquilla
Adalberto Carrasquilla is Panama’s main creative force and, arguably, their most talented player. He controls the tempo from midfield and acts as the key link between defence and attack.
Very much an all-rounder in the middle of the park, the Pumas playmaker also boasts a respectable return of 14 goal involvements across his 72 appearances for his country. However, he is also prone to picking up a booking, having been cautioned 15 times at international level, along with one red card.
Anibal Godoy
Anibal Godoy is a defensive midfielder who has been a regular for Panama since 2010 and now captains the side heading into the 2026 World Cup.
He is one of Thomas Christiansen’s most trusted players and will sit in front of the defence, breaking up play and helping to circulate possession. At club level, the 36-year-old has spent much of his career in MLS, notably with the San Jose Earthquakes and Nashville, and is currently with San Diego.
Godoy featured in all three of his country’s matches at the 2018 World Cup, picking up a booking against Belgium.
Amir Murillo
Amir Murillo will be one of Panama’s most dangerous defenders going forward. He offers plenty of pace and width down the right-hand side, and also boasts a strong pedigree at club level in Europe.
Murillo spent the first half of the 2025-26 campaign with Marseille before joining Besiktas in February. Across his time at both clubs this season, he has registered a quietly impressive four goals and five assists in 40 appearances.
He is also another Panama player who has a habit of picking up cards, having been booked 9 times domestically this season.
