Port Vale have suffered back-to-back defeats in League One to put something of a dent in their otherwise impressive start to life in the third tier, but does it make them susceptible to an FA Cup giant-killing? Kevin Horlock’s team are in the Isthmian League North Division, which is the 8th tier of English football, but they reached the second round of the FA Cup as recently as 2019/20.

Our Football Match Stats provide strong insight into this weekend's games.

Port Vale (-1) Handicap

I actually think that Vale are a very competent League One team.

As such I feel like they should be backed to win this with a degree of comfort. Even though Maldon & Tiptree have invested heavily and they sit atop the Isthmian League North Division, it is still a very low level to be going up against a third tier team. Freddie Sears, Macauley Bonne et al. make quite the impression at that level, but the fact still stands that they are not EFL players anymore for a reason, and Port Vale certainly won't fear them.

If Darren Moore names a strong team, and I have no reason to suspect that he won't, they should have too much firepower for the 8th tier side. Vale have covered this handicap away from home at Barnsley and Exeter in the league, and covered it twice in the EFL Trophy as well.

Devante Cole to Score

We know that Cole is a good finisher and goalscorer at League One level. This selection is very much based on team news so we need to be careful that Moore doesn't rotate for this clash.

The former England youth international has four league goals already this season, after back-to-back double-figure goal seasons earned a move into the Championship with West Brom. Whilst that move didn't work out for Cole, it is still evidence that he should be too sharp for Maldon & Tiptree.

Cole is currently scoring at a rate of 0.54 per 90 for Vale, his two League One seasons with Barnsley saw him scoring at a rate of 0.45 and 0.41 goals per 90. It is a finishing rate that I think Maldon & Tiptree will find difficult to stop.

📈 Port Vale v Maldon Tiptree Form & Stats

Port Vale have dropped back into the bottom four of League One after back-to-back defeats. They were unlucky to lose to Wigan Athletic, 1-0, but they were comprehensively defeated by Stockport, 3-0. There is no shame in that, Stockport moved to the top of the table with that win, and Port Vale should actually still be confident in their chances of consolidation in League One.

I say this because although they are 21st in the league, they actually sit 3rd in the expected points table, by far the biggest difference between points and expected points in the league. They are usually very solid defensively, and, despite losing Lorent Tolaj, they have remained a good attacking threat as well.

Maldon & Tiptree are enjoying an excellent start to the campaign in the Isthmian League North. They sit top of the league with 10 wins from their opening 12 league matches. Combining this with their successful run through the FA Cup qualification rounds, Kevin Horlock's team should travel to Vale Park full of confidence.

A +18 goal difference is the best in the league as well and comes as a result of the 2nd-highest goal tally, 26 in 12 matches, and the 2nd-best defensive record, conceding eight goals so far. The key has been their financial strength compared to other teams at the level. It is very unusual to have multiple players on financial packages good enough to mean that they don't have other jobs on the side. Having the likes of Freddie Sears and Macauley Bonne upfront, a pair who many Championship observers will have seen play on many occasions, is a testament to this.
