Rangers Over 3.5 Goals @ 1.75

After coming in for some criticism over the past couple of weeks, I suspect Russell Martin will be taking this cup tie very seriously on Saturday evening. As such, I think a minimum of four goals is well within range for the hosts here. Rangers hit three goals when hosting Viktoria Plzen, and they struck twice against Panathinaikos at Ibrox.

Part-time outfit Alloa will represent much inferior opposition, so Rangers should book a quarter-final berth by recording a handsome and morale-boosting victory. The Wasps’ backline was breached multiple times in their final Scottish League Cup group game away at Airdrie, and they have since failed to silence Stenhousemuir away from home.

Both Teams to Score No @ 1.61

While Rangers have looked suspect defensively during the early weeks of the season, I think they look overpriced to seal a win alongside a clean sheet when they face Alloa on Saturday evening. Russell Martin’s side managed to silence both Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox in recent times, so they should be more than capable of repeating the trick against third tier opposition.

Alloa could only muster up one goal in their victory away at newly-promoted East Fife last weekend, and chances aren’t going to be easily forthcoming at Ibrox on Saturday.

  • Rangers are unbeaten at Ibrox this season, winning two of their three matches.

  • Rangers have kept a clean sheet in each of their two victories at Ibrox this season.

  • Alloa won each of their four matches during the group stage of the Scottish League Cup.

  • Alloa have won each of their opening two Scottish League One games of the season.

Rangers will begin their Scottish League Cup campaign with a home tie against Alloa on Saturday evening.

On paper, this is the biggest mismatch of the round, with Rangers as short as 1.04 to win in 90 minutes. Meanwhile, Alloa are a whopping 20.0 to spring a shock at Ibrox while the draw is as big as 16.5.

🔵 Rangers Looking Ropey

Rangers took one step closer to Champions League qualification despite falling to a 2-1 defeat to Viktoria Plzen in midweek. I watched that game on Tuesday evening and I would argue that was the Gers’ worst performance under Russell Martin to date. That viewpoint is backed up by the underlying data, with Rangers giving up a sizeable xG of 3.31 in Plzen, with the hosts registering 27 shots, 10 of which hit the target.

On the domestic front, Rangers have made a dismal start to the season, drawing 1-1 with both Motherwell and Dundee.

🟠 Alloa on an Upward Curve

Alloa have made a quietly impressive start to the season. The Wasps won each of their four matches during the group stage of the Scottish League Cup, most notably claiming the scalp of Dundee before winning a group decider away at Championship outfit Airdrie. Andy Graham’s men have carried that momentum into the league season, winning each of their opening two contests of the campaign.

While Alloa did fall to a 2-1 defeat at Stranraer in the Scottish Challenge Cup on Tuesday night, I wouldn’t read too much into that loss as Wasps boss Graham opted to field a youthful second string.

📊 Rangers v Alloa H2H

Rangers and Alloa have not run into each other since they were both in the Scottish Championship way back in 2015/16. Somewhat surprisingly, Rangers won just two of the four meetings between the pair that season, with the other two encounters ending 1-1.
