Real Madrid v Juventus

🗓️

Kick Off: Tuesday 1st July at 20:00

🏆

Competition: FIFA Club World Cup

The standout tie of the round of 16 stage sees Xabi Alonso’s new look Real Madrid face off against a Juventus side who are in a moment of transition and will be hoping to put a tough 5-2 loss against Manchester City in their final group game to one side.

Neither side have yet hit the heights that we expect from them given the quality present in both camps but Real Madrid did look a bit more attuned to Xabi Alonso’s preferred style of play in their 3-0 win over Salzburg in their final group game.

These sides had contrasting ends to the group stages which will impact this round of 16 tie. Juventus registered routine and expected wins over Al Ain and Wydad Casablanca before falling to a crushing 5-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester City. That final group game exposed some of the issues present in the Juventus side, which Madrid can look to target here.

Real Madrid often grow into these sorts of competitions, they can look pretty average and even lacklustre at times in the early stages of a knockout competition as we’ve seen time and time again in the Champions League, but usually have the nous and the skill to navigate these knockout ties.

Juventus’ backline really struggled to deal with the quality that City possess and it will be a similar story here, even in the absence of Kylian Mbappe - Real Madrid still have Bellingham, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr who can all cause serious problems as well as Gonzalo Garcia who has impressed in leading the line for Real Madrid so far.

Los Blancos should be able to book their spot in the quarter finals with a victory over a Juventus side who don’t look primed for a deep run in this competition and may already be focusing on preparations for next season after an underwhelming domestic campaign during the 24/25 campaign.

Vinicius Jr is always an important player for Real Madrid but even more so in the absence of Kylian Mbappe. Vinicius played as part of a front two in Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Salzburg in their final group game - this ended up being the perfect platform for him as he scored and assisted in a man of the match performance.

Vinicius Jr registered 36 goal contributions across his 51 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid during the 24/25 season - only Mbappe registered more goal contributions for Madrid during the most recent campaign.

Yildiz has been really bright at the Club World Cup so far, registering four goal contributions across his three appearances (3 goals, 1 assist). He’s had seven shots across these games (3.50 per 90) with three of them finding the target (1.50 per 90).

Yildiz has provided a goal contribution in each of his three games at the Club World Cup and will be eager to add to that tally against Real Madrid. Yildiz averaged 0.86 shots on target per 90 across his 35 appearances in Serie A during the 24/25 campaign.

💻 Real Madrid v Juventus Form and Tactics

Real Madrid looked a completely different side to the one we have been used to seeing for the last few years in their final group game against Salzburg. Xabi Alonso lined up his side in a 3-5-2 shape with Vinicius Jr and Gonzalo Garcia spearheading the attack. This proved to be incredibly effective against Salzburg, meaning it is likely that Xabi Alonso opts for this system again.

This shape also gets the best out of Trent Alexander-Arnold which may have partly influenced Alonso’s thinking. By playing Trent as a wingback, it lightens the defensive burden on the former Liverpool man which means he can be deployed in the area he is most effective, higher up the pitch. The midfield three against Salzburg was Bellingham, Valverde and Guler which again is a brilliant balance of physicality, energy and creativity which helps Madrid to get the most out of their talented forward players.

Juventus have been lining up in a 3-4-3 shape throughout the tournament and since Igor Tudor took over. This suggests that we will get quite a few 1v1 battles here as the shape of the two sides is quite similar. Juventus may have the upper hand in the wide areas - Conceicao and Yildiz are their most crucial players and they could get joy here if the wingback of Madrid are not disciplined in their defensive roles.
