Sion v Grasshoppers

🏟
Saturday 13th August - 5:00PM KO

FC Sion raised some eyebrows across the country with their dominant 3-0 victory over champions FC Zurich at the Letzigrund last week. The result was significant not only because it continued the dire start to the Swiss Super League title defence of FCZ but also because Sion produced a level of performance that many didn’t expect them capable of to lift themselves into the European spots in this early stage of the season.

Grasshoppers have also defied the pre-season predictions that had them down as relegation candidates by going unbeaten in their first four matches, winning two and drawing the others, including an impressive point gained in Bern against Young Boys.

GC’s matches have been entertaining, featuring a total of twelve goals across the four matches. Both teams have also scored in all four of those games. On the other hand, FC Sion have been scoring their goals in bursts. They netted three away to Lugano in their first match before failing to score in the two games prior to their 3-0 win away to Zurich.

With GC looking both dangerous in attack and suspect at the back in equal measure, I think we’ll get goals for both teams again here. Despite two clean sheets in their last two games, Sion did concede five goals in the two previous matches, so GC shouldn’t have a problem scoring either.

Prediction: Both Teams to Score, 1.57 on Betfair (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

St. Gallen v Luzern

🏟
Saturday 13th August - 7:30PM KO

St. Gallen have shown glimpses of both the good and bad that encapsulated their season in 21/22. Their two wins at home over Winterthur and FC Zurich mirrored the team that electrified the Super League in the second half of last season. The two defeats away to Servette and Grasshoppers were more reminiscent of the team that won only one of eighteen games in the first half of the last campaign.

The 3-2 defeat suffered at GC last time out was rather galling, especially considering FCSG held a 2-0 lead after just eleven minutes. Goals haven’t been a problem for Peter Zeidler’s side, and they do look strong at home but there were plenty of defensive issues to address from that defeat too.

Luzern were able to play catch-up in midweek after two postponed games, playing out a 1-1 draw with Grasshoppers at the swissporarena. FCL are unbeaten after those opening three matches and will be confident they can avoid the relegation battle this time around after dealing with the play-off at the end of last season.

This fixture promises goals. There have been 2.5 Goals in six of the last eight matches between the two at kybunpark, and a total of twenty-six goals. FCSG rarely fail to score at home while Luzern have failed to score at this venue only once since 2016. As a result, I expect a fun game in eastern Switzerland on Saturday.

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals, 1.47 on Betfair (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Basel v Lugano

🏟
Sunday 14th August - 3:30PM KO

After their 0-0 draw with Young Boys last weekend, FC Basel are still searching for their first victory of the Super League season. Nevertheless, there will be a good feeling around St. Jakob-Park on Sunday after Alex Frei’s men came through a testing UEFA Europa Conference League encounter with Brondby to advance to the play-offs. They needed penalties in the end, but the performance levels were high, and the win was richly deserved.

Lugano do have a victory to their name domestically but they’ve lost all their other games. A 2-1 defeat at home to Luzern being the latest in a very underwhelming start to the season before a 3-1 loss in Israel on Thursday ended their Conference League hopes.

FCB’s start to the campaign hasn’t been perfect by any means but there are clear signs they’re heading in the right direction. It is true that they could be more clinical, which was evident again in their goalless draw with Young Boys last weekend, but they are starting to look like a side that is coming together nicely. Lugano aren’t performing well and there aren’t many signs that they will get out of their rut soon, so I think Basel will pick up their first win on Sunday.

Prediction: Basel to Win, 1.83 on Betfair (⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Young Boys v Servette

🏟
Sunday 14th August - 3:30PM KO

After such a lacklustre showing last season, YB have wasted no time in the 22/23 campaign in showing that they are a much improved and more well-oiled unit under the stewardship of Raphael Wicky. They are unbeaten in their first four games and sit at the top of the table, level on points with both Grasshoppers and their opponents on Sunday, Servette FC. The Bernese club are winless in their last two after draws with GC and Basel, but they produced an impressive performance to see off Finnish side KuPS on Thursday to qualify for the play-off of the Conference League.

It is an unusual feeling for SFC fans so far, they weren’t expected to pull up any trees after a quiet transfer window, but they’ve been very efficient in an unbeaten start to the season that has brought them two wins, two draws and the concession of only one goal. They’ve only scored three goals themselves but that has been enough to allow them to rub shoulders near the top of the table in third.

It is important to note that both of SFC’s victories were at home in Geneva, a venue where they are tough to beat. Away from home, they were held to a goalless draw in the derby with Sion and were fortunate to draw 1-1 in Basel, a result that came mostly due to the heroics of their goalkeeper Jeremy Frick. YB are more clinical than anything they’ve come up against, and I think the firepower they possess will be too much.

Prediction: Young Boys to Win, 1.53 on Betfair (⭐⭐⭐⭐)
