📈 Wrexham v Sheffield United Form & Stats
Wrexham are five matches without a win in the league, and the big concern for the global Wrexham fanbase has to be the number of chances that they are conceding at the moment. Their defeat in the Welsh derby against Swansea last weekend was the third match in four in which they had conceded well over 2 xG in a game. The main difference here is that all three of those matches were away games, they haven’t conceded 2 xG in a home match since 23rd August.
Indeed, it is home and away form that seems to make a big difference to Wrexham. Eight matches unbeaten at home, and a positive xG differential of +0.26 xG, whereas it is eight without a win away and a -1.2 xG differential.
Sheffield United were back to winning ways at a canter last time out against Birmingham City, winning 3-0 after disappointing results at West Brom and at home to Norwich. They are now 18th in the Championship table, with a seven point gap back to the relegation zone. They are fifth in the expected points table though, which probably more accurately describes their level as a team.
Callum O’Hare leads the goals and assists charts for Blades, which is a great return so far for a player who isn’t always universally loved by Blades fans. Their expected goals total is up to fourth in the league, which is a huge improvement under Chris Wilder. They have moved into the top half for expected goals against as well, which also shows that defensive organisation has improved.
📔 Wrexham v Sheffield United Formation & Team News
Wrexham have been playing 3-5-2, and it seems as though Parkinson will stick with that system for the foreseeable future. There has been some rotation in midfield, which is an area in which Wrexham do have strength in depth. There is also a lot of striking surplus at the club at the moment, as Kieffer Moore and Josh Windass are being trusted with the vast majority of the workload.
Wrexham also still have a long list of injuries to deal with, though most of them are more fringe players. Liberato Cacace is almost back to match fitness, James McClean has been deputising, and Issa Kabore is a big miss too, but Ryan Longman is an able deputy there too.
Sheffield United have been quite flexible in their set-up since Chris Wilder has resumed control. Some decisions are made for the opposition, but Wilder seems to be set on a back four at this stage of his Sheffield United management. It has looked like a 4-2-2-2 variant at times, with a pair of central midfielders, two wide players coming inside to affect play centrally, and the use of a pair of strikers is very important for Wilder.
However, their last match saw more of a 4-2-3-1 shape with Callum O’Hare playing off Patrick Bamford. All three attacking midfielders were narrow still though. Sydie Peck is likely to remain out, as is Chieo Ogbene, and the two Bens, Godfrey and Mee, in defence.
