Linfield to score

Linfield won the Northern Irish Premiership last season and did so with a convincing away record which would suggest that they can find the back of the net here. They lost just three of their 18 away games domestically and scored 32 goals across these matches (1.77 per game). They are familiar with Shelbourne having faced off against the Irish side in Champions League qualifying back in July, Shelbourne came away 2-1 winners after two legs in that tie - Linfield found the back of the net in the home game but struggled a little in the away fixture. However, the resilience that Linfield have shown in the last two rounds of qualifying would suggest that they are better prepared for this clash.

Mipo Odubeko to score anytime

Odubeko scored Shelbourne’s winning goal against Linfield in the first leg of the Champions League qualifying clash these sides contested just a month ago. He’s Shelbourne’s top scorer in the Irish Premier Division having scored six goals across his 19 starts domestically, as well as providing three assists across these games. Odubeko can continue to be a threat against a Linfield side that Shelbourne had the better of in the home tie of their Champions League qualifying clash against the Northern Irish side.

🔴 Shelbourne struggling domestically

Shelbourne have had a poor season by their standards domestically up to this point. They won the Irish Premier Division last season by a margin of just two points but have fallen down the pecking order this season and currently sit fifth in the Irish top flight, 14 points behind current leaders Shamrock Rovers who finished second last season and have managed to maintain their performance level.

That being said, Shelbourne will still really fancy their chances of qualifying from this tie, especially seeing as they already have seen off Linfield over two legs a month ago as part of Champions League qualifying. It is quite rare that sides will play each other in qualifying for two different competitions but it should give both sides a better understanding of their opponents than they would otherwise have if they were drawn against a more unfamiliar opponent.

🔵 Linfield can lean on their solid away record

Linfield are very early on in their domestic season which may give a slight physical advantage to Shelbourne here. However the Northern Irish side have started their domestic season as they finished last with a 3-0 win over Dungannon Swifts - all three goals came from Kieran Offord who has also netted twice in Conference League qualifying. Remarkably, his hat trick on the opening day of the season has already taken him past his tally across 12 appearances for Linfield domestically last campaign (2).

Linfield will be hoping that they got more of a sight of goal in this clash than they did in the Champions League qualifying clash between these sides. They only had one shot on target in that game, but their away record from last season proves that they are capable of a much higher standard of attacking performance. I anticipate that Linfield’s experience in that Champions League qualifying clash will aid them in this first leg, as well as the momentum they’ve been able to develop throughout the Conference League qualifying stages.

📊 Shelbourne v Linfield H2H

As I’ve mentioned, these sides faced off as part of Champions League qualifying just a month ago with Shelbourne coming away 2-1 winners over the two legs having registered a 1-0 win in the initial encounter.
