Spain are the reigning European champions, and they will be aiming to add the World Cup to their trophy cabinet for the first time since 2010. La Roja have been drawn in Group H alongside Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, and Luis de la Fuente's side are one of the favourites to win the competition.

🌍 How did Spain qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

Spain's European qualifying campaign was convincing, as de la Fuente's side topped group E with five wins and one draw from their six matches. Their only stalemate came against Serbia in Belgrade, which was their first game back after lifting the European trophy, but La Roja returned to their best after that. Spain made light work of a relatively competitive group of Denmark, Serbia and Switzerland, as they scored 13 and conceded just four, which underlines how strong they are at both ends of the field.

Those performances are even more impressive when considering Spain had to contend without some key players - Lamine Yamal only played two matches, while Pedri also missed some games due to injury.

👔 Who is the Spain manager at the 2026 World Cup?

Luis de la Fuente knows the Spanish national side inside out - he has been involved with the setup since 2013, working his way up from manager of the U19s, all the way up to the senior side. He took over from Luis Enrique and hopes to deliver Spain’s first World Cup title since 2010.

He implores his side to be aggressive and front-footed in their play, regardless of their opponent. That can sometimes leave them vulnerable on the break when they concede possession, and the top sides will be able to exploit that.

🔎 Who are Spain's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Mikel Oyarzabal

The Spanish squad looks stacked, but the only position they are slightly lacking is up top. Mikel Oyarzabal looks the prime candidate to start up front, and he had a stellar World Cup qualifying campaign. Oyarzabal racked up nine goal involvements, with six goals and three assists from his six appearances.

Martin Zubimendi

Former Real Sociedad man Martin Zubimendi also played a key role in Spain’s qualifying campaign, and will hopefully feature alongside Pedri and Fabian Ruiz in the Spanish midfield in June. The 26-year-old has been a key cog in Mikel Arteta’s system for Arsenal this season. Even with Rodri returning to fitness, Zubimendi looks like he could have a massive role, especially after his contributions in the Euro 2024 final against England.

Lamine Yamal

It’s impossible to talk about Spain, without mentioning Lamine Yamal. Even though he only played a limited role in the qualifying matches, starting just two games, Yamal still registered three assists. He seems to have shaken off any injuries, and has featured regularly for Barcelona, which is a massive boost for Luis de la Fuente. The 18-year-old has 15 goals and 13 assists to his name for the Catalans this season, and has once again been integral to their title charge.
