Group H Preview

Group H is one of the most intriguing groups at the World Cup with competitors from four different continents facing off to try and reach the knockout stages. Spain are the favourites to come through the group as the reigning European Champions, and are fancied to go deep in the competition.

Cape Verde will feature at a World Cup for the very first time, though their inexperience may make it difficult for them to find a way through this group with Uruguay and Saudi Arabia more than capable of qualifying alongside Spain for the next round.

The battle between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay for 2nd place should be the main focus in this group, with Spain expected to comfortably top the group. Saudi Arabia, in particular, have been building their presence on the international stage over recent years and put in a decent display during the last World Cup, notably beating Argentina.

🇪🇸 Spain

I expect Spain to navigate this group pretty comfortably, Luis de la Fuente has assembled one of the most complete teams on the international stage, which should see them go deep at the World Cup.

If we look at Spain’s performance in the group stage of the most recent European Championship, it paints a positive picture for them to dominate the group in this tournament. Spain won all three of their games against Croatia, Italy and Albania and also crucially scored the most goals of any side in the group (five).

The rest of the sides in Spain’s group don’t offer much of an attacking threat, and I think the games between Cape Verde, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia will be closely contested as it is a pretty open race to finish 2nd in the group.

🇺🇾 Uruguay

Of the remaining three sides, I think Uruguay are best placed to qualify from the group alongside Spain. Marcelo Bielsa will lead them into the World Cup which is an appealing storyline in itself, and they have superior quality to the likes of Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

Only Ecuador and Argentina picked up more points than Uruguay in the ultra competitive qualifying campaign for the World Cup in South America. They only conceded 12 goals across their 18 matches, so we can expect them to be a stubborn side in the early stages of the tournament.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia will be trying to live up to one of the all time World Cup shocks when they beat Argentina in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.

I believe they've got the minerals to beat Cape Verde and, therefore, put themselves in a very strong position to at least qualify as a 3rd-placed team. Eight of those 12 3rd-placed teams across the group stage will make it through to the round of 32.

They played in the 2025 Gold Cup as a guest nation, which is great World Cup preparation as it was held in the USA and Canada. They came 2nd in their group, beating Haiti 1-0, and losing 1-0 to the USA before securing qualification with a 1-1 draw v Trinidad & Tobago.

Not standout results, but they gave a good account of themselves and actually limited USA to just five shots in their group stage defeat. Demonstrating a defensive competency that'll stand them in good stead for this tournament. They lost 2-0 to the eventual winners, Mexico, in the quarter-finals.

🇨🇻 Cape Verde

Only Curacao, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Iraq are longer to win the World Cup with Betfred than Cape Verde.

It is their first ever World Cup, after sealing qualification by topping Group D of the African qualifiers. Finishing four points clear of 2nd-placed Cameroon.

They failed to qualify for the last Africa Cup of Nations, so it's easy to see why they are such outsiders at the World Cup. They were solid rather than sparkling in World Cup qualification, conceding just eight goals from 10 games and four of those came in a defeat to Cameroon.

They haven't won a game of any kind since qualifying, and their start to the tournament couldn't be much tougher with Spain in the first game followed by Uruguay. They'll do well to keep progression alive and ensure their goal difference doesn't take too much of a hammering by the time they face Saudi Arabia in the third group game.
