Sturm Graz and Rangers will square off in the Europa League at the Merkur-Arena on Thursday night.

The Austrian hosts came away empty-handed from their opening match of the competition when losing 2-0 away at FC Midtjylland on matchday 1.

Rangers also failed to hit the ground running last week, as Russell Martin’s 10-man team crashed to a 1-0 defeat at home to Genk.

The beleaguered Rangers boss has since steered his side to a last-gasp 2-1 win away at Livingston in the Scottish Premiership.

Sturm Graz Double Chance @ 1.40

Having watched Rangers’ game away at Livingston on Sunday, it’s difficult to make a case for the visitors on Thursday night. While Russell Martin will be relieved to have finally secured his first league win as Rangers manager, it’s unlikely one victory will solve all their problems; indeed, it may just paper over the cracks.

The Gers still look extremely fragile at the back, and they continue to be prone to passive spells, something that was evident during the second half of Sunday's win over Livingston.

While Sturm Graz fell to a 2-0 defeat away at FC Midtjylland, they have been ticking along nicely in the Austrian Bundesliga, where they sit 2nd in the table after winning five of their opening seven league games of the campaign. What's more, Jurgen Samuel’s side have won each of their last three domestic matches, including an eye-catching 2-0 triumph away at RB Salzburg. Thus, the hosts look well placed to avoid defeat against a Rangers side that have failed to win any of their three continental away games this term, losing each of their last two.

Over 1.5 Goals @ 1.20

Given that both teams failed to pick up any points from their respective assignments on matchday 1, I think we will see a minimum of two match goals at the Merkur Arena on Thursday night. A sizeable 13 of Rangers’ 15 matches across all competitions this season have featured over 1.5 goals, including six of their seven continental contests. That can be attributed to the Gers’ struggles when it comes to keeping clean sheets, failing to do so in 11 of their 15 matches under Russell Martin’s watch.

As for Sturm Graz, five of their opening seven Austrian Bundesliga matches of the season have produced two or more match strikes. On top of that, each of the Blacks’ three matches in Europe this season have broken the over 1.5 goal barrier.

Given the contrasting starts that these two teams have made to their respective seasons, I think the hosts could be capable of covering the proposed over 1.5 goal line on their own.

Otar Kiteishvili to have 1+ Shots on Target @ 1.44

Otar Kiteishvili could be Sturm Graz’s dangerman on Thursday night. The Georgian midfielder has scored an impressive five goals across his eight appearances in all competitions this season. With that in mind, Kiteishvili looks well worthy of support to register a minimum of one shot on target during this contest.

Typically deployed in the number 10 role, the 29-year-old playmaker often finds himself in advanced areas, not to mention he has also been on penalty kick duty this season. What’s more, Kiteishvili will be rubbing his hands at the prospect of coming up against a Rangers side that looks completely devoid of confidence or belief right now.

The Light Blues have conceded a minimum of 20 shots in each of their previous three European games away from home this season, losing the xG battle in each of those respective contests. The Scottish giants also gave up 18 shots when going down 1-0 at home to Genk last week, so I think there is plenty of scope for the aforementioned Kiteishvili to work Jack Butland at least once on Thursday night.

Djeidi Gassama to have 1+ Shots on Target @ 1.33

While the goals may have dried up for Djeidi Gassama in recent weeks, he has continued to hit the target with some regularity. The Rangers winger was responsible for one of his side’s two on-target efforts against Genk at Ibrox last Thursday night. What’s more, the 22-year-old also managed to work the opposition goalkeeper in three of Rangers’ six Champions League qualifiers earlier this season.

It’s also worth noting that Gassama has hit the target at least once in four of his six outings for Rangers in this season’s Scottish Premiership, including two of the Light Blues’ three matches away from Ibrox.

Gassama’s pace and direct running style could be an important weapon for Rangers on the counter-attack in Austria, not to mention he also likes to cut inside and get shots away when the opportunity presents itself. Thus, the Gers ace looks a strong contender to land an on-target effort at the Merkur-Arena on Thursday night.

📈 Sturm Graz v Rangers Form & Tactics

Sturm Graz bounced back from last week’s 2-0 defeat in Denmark by earning a narrow 1-0 win over Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga on Sunday. That victory made it five wins from seven for Sturm Graz in this season’s Austrian top-flight, the most notable of which was a 2-0 success away at RB Salzburg. The Blacks are currently occupying 2nd place in the Austrian Bundesliga, sitting just two points behind Rapid Vienna with a game in hand.

Like Rangers, Sturm Graz were also soundly beaten in the play-off round of this season’s Champions League qualifiers. Jurgen Samuel’s side were thrashed 5-0 by Bodo/Glimt in Norway, though they did restore some pride by winning the return leg 2-1.

Sturm Graz’s domestic matches have been pretty card-heavy this season, with the hosts opening seven Austrian Bundesliga matches of the season generating an average of five cards per game.

Rangers finally recorded their first Scottish Premiership success of the season after leaving it late to claim a 2-1 win at Livingston on Sunday. Despite the victory, it would be fair to say that the vast majority of the Rangers supporters remain unconvinced by under-fire manager Russell Martin.

While Rangers made heavy weather of their aforementioned win over Livingston, they have taken top honours from each of their last two domestic matches, having also beaten Hibernian 2-0 in the Scottish League Cup.

Ill-discipline cost Rangers in their Europa League opener with Genk last Thursday, with Mohamed Diomande receiving a straight red card just before half time. Moreover, that was the third red card that Rangers have been shown this term, with the Light Blues also having a player dismissed against Dundee and Club Brugge.

📔 Sturm Graz v Rangers Formation & Team News

Sturm Graz

While Sturm Graz's boss Jurgen Samuel has employed a 4-4-2 diamond formation in the Austrian Bundesliga this season, he did opt for a 4-2-3-1 system away at Midtjylland last week. With the diamond formation, Sturm Graz like to utilise the central areas of the pitch rather than using the flanks.

As was the case on Sunday, Sturm Graz again look set to be without the injured quartet of Arjan Malic, Axel Kayombo, Daniil Khudyakov and Filip Rozga.

Rangers

Russell Martin will likely stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation that he has used more often than not since being appointed Rangers manager earlier this year. Martin's preferred style of play has always been built around controlling possession and building out from the back.

Mohamed Diomande will miss out here after receiving a red card during last week’s 1-0 loss to Genk, so either Connor Barron or Joe Rothwell are likely to come into the starting XI. Dujon Sterling is still recovering from an injury, while Kieran Dowell and Nedim Bajrami have been left out of Rangers' Europa League squad.
