Young Boys v Grasshoppers
🏟
Sunday 22nd May – 3:30PM KO
There was a brief period of time during Thursday evening’s penultimate round of Super League matches that YB looked like they would take command in the battle with FC Basel for second place. They were 2-0 ahead in Luzern as FC Basel laboured to a scoreless draw away in Geneva, but soon found themselves level at 2-2 and once again two points adrift in third. While they also need a helping hand from Lugano, they have one last opportunity to take the runners-up spot at home to a Grasshoppers side that has nothing left to play for.
Grasshoppers aren’t mathematically safe just yet, however, their impressive 3-2 victory at home to St. Gallen has all but confirmed their Super League status. Only a win away in Zurich for Luzern and a goal swing of around twelve would change the relegation narrative at this stage. It is a scenario that would be something approaching a miracle and GC can make the trip to Bern in a relaxed state of mind for probably the first time this season.
YB remain a strong force at home and were emphatic 4-1 winners against St. Gallen last time out. They have something riding on this game while GC’s foot will be firmly off of the gas after their midweek win. This is YB, so there will be goals, and I expect them to finish in style.

Sion v Servette
🏟
Sunday 22nd May – 3:30PM KO
For the second time in three seasons, the Derby du Rhone will play a starring role in determining the relegation fate of FC Sion. The Valais club are the hosts at the Tourbillon for the visit of Servette and, much like at the end of the 19/20 campaign, they need to take something from the match to ensure their safety in the Super League.
Unlike two years ago when they ran out 2-1 winners at the Stade de Geneve on the final day, they don’t need to rely on favours from elsewhere, and they also only need a point against an SFC side that is out of form. Sion would actually have to lose to their rivals alongside a win for Luzern away to Zurich to be dragged into the play-off spot.
For my money, this is the best derby that Swiss football has to offer. These are always tight, passionate matches and I expect that to be increased even further on Sunday given the circumstances. With everything at stake for Sion, I think they will do enough to avoid relegation and they can win this match against SFC, but the visitors will also be keen to make trouble for their rivals, so I would cover yourself with Sion draw no bet.

FC Basel v Lugano
🏟
Sunday 22nd May- 3:30PM
FC Basel were held to their seventeenth league draw of the season away to Servette on Thursday evening. It is a result that breaks the previous Super League record and is also the most amount of draws that they have had in any season in their existence. The work to improve this FCB team and make them genuine title contenders is already well underway after the signing of goalkeeper Marwin Hitz from Dortmund was confirmed on Friday. The early transfer dealings also give some insight into the job that vice-president David Degen will have over the summer.
Lugano have had their best-ever season in the Super League. They confirmed fourth place and their highest-ever points total with their 3-1 win over champions Zurich last time out, and they already have a Swiss Cup and entry into the UEFA Europa Conference League in the bag too. Confidence is sky-high for the Ticino club ahead of their visit to St. Jakob-Park.
FCB need a win to secure second place while Lugano will be out to improve their new record points tally, so there is still plenty of ambition left in this campaign for both sides on the final day. For those reasons, and because the home side have looked defensively shaky in recent weeks, I think we’ll have goals at both ends.

St Gallen v Lausanne
🏟
Sunday 22nd May- 3:30PM
This is the one game in the final round of the season that has nothing riding on it at all as St. Gallen welcome Lausanne to kybunpark.
St. Gallen are confirmed to finish no higher or lower than fifth, not bad by any means given their early season performances, but the last few weeks had promised more with a Swiss Cup final and European hopes still a possibility as we neared the conclusion. Their form since the winter break has been scintillating at times though, and they have given their supporters plenty of optimism that they can take one of the European spots next season.
Lausanne have danced around the bottom of the table since the beginning and, quite frankly, it has been one of their worst seasons in recent history, both on and off the field. It is fair to say that the players and staff will be eager to hear the full-time whistle on Sunday to put it behind them and instead begin to focus on how they can make an immediate return next season.
FCSG have hit a sticky patch in their last four games, but they have too much firepower for their visitors. I expect Lausanne’s season to end exactly how it began back on July 24th: with a defeat to St. Gallen.

Zurich v Luzern
🏟
Sunday 22nd May- 3:30PM
It is finally trophy day in Zurich. This is a day that FCZ fans have waited thirteen years for and that some fans may have felt wouldn’t come around again anytime soon given the dominance of FC Basel and Young Boys over the last decade.
There have been some signs of FCZ slowing down a little, as could be expected, after their title-winning performance away to Basel at the start of the month. A makeshift side featuring some youngsters was held to a 2-2 draw at home to Lausanne before they were soundly beaten by Lugano on Thursday.
FC Luzern are the visitors to the Letzigrund and they simply must spoil, or at least dampen, the party to avoid the relegation play-off. It is a tall order against the best team in the league, but it is that never-say-die attitude that has given them any chance at all on the final day.
FCZ will be determined to receive their thirteenth league crown in the perfect circumstances after a victory, but there will be a party atmosphere around the place with their work already done for this season. Luzern have only failed to score twice away from the swissporarena and can still save themselves. I think we’ll see goals for both teams here.
