Under the management of Thiago Motta, Bologna have been massively overachieving, currently placed fourth in Serie A with just one defeat since mid January. Friday evening presents an ideal opportunity for Bologna to extend the gap on Roma to seven points, as they fight for their first-ever appearance in the modern Champions League next season.  

Torino, meanwhile, sit in tenth position in Serie A – well clear of any relegation concerns, but 13 points off the European spots. With just four league games remaining, there is mathematically nothing to play for, for the team in Turin. Adrien Tameze received his marching orders last game against Inter Milan for preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity, so will be unavailable on Friday. Highly-rated centre-back Perr Schuurs will also be unavailable for the home side, due to a cruciate ligament injury. 

Bologna won the reverse fixture 2-0 in November thanks to goals from Giovanni Fabbian and Joshua Zirkzee. They scored with both of their shots on target, but were the dominant side in generating 1.55 xGF to Torino’s 0.45.

Ivan Juric has remained focused on defensive stability – Torino conceded just 41 goals in 38 games last season, less than Inter Milan. They have been far from free-flowing entertainers, having played out eight goalless stalemates in the league this season, six of which were in front of dozing home support. In the current domestic campaign, Torino have accumulated the fifth-lowest xGF, and conceded the third-lowest xGA – only behind Juventus and Inter Milan.

Zirkzee has been impressive this season, and a mainstay in the starting XI under Thiago Motta. In his second season since his permanent move to Italy, he seems to be a lot more settled, scoring 11 goals in 32 appearances. He’s the top scorer for Bologna, much improved from his humble two-goal tally last campaign. 

Having lost skipper Lewis Ferguson to a cruciate ligament injury, Bologna’s chances have taken a slight hit. Thiago Motta declared the Scotland international ‘irreplaceable’ – although in his absence Bologna managed to overcome Roma 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. Despite the disappointing result at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara against Udinese, Alexis Saelemakers put in a notable performance and has scored in back-to-back games.

Joshua Zirkzee is averaging 0.97 shots on target per game in Serie A this season rising to 1.36 per game when playing away. His price of 1.53 on Betfair for 1+ shots on target looks especially bulky, considering it has landed in 12 out of 13 starts on the road this season.  

Torino have been poor at home recently, and have failed to score in four of their last five home games. Bologna have it all to play for, motivated by Champions League qualification – they are being undervalued here despite Torino’s impressive defensive record. A 0-1 victory in favour of Bologna at 7.0 on Betfair seems a considerable mark-up on the odds of 2.70 for a Bologna victory in isolation, anticipating a low-scoring affair.
