Uruguay won the first ever World Cup competition in 1930, but haven’t had much success since their second title in 1950.
They didn’t make it out of the group stages in 2022, and Uruguay have been drawn in Group H alongside Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde, which could be competitive.

🌍 How did Uruguay qualify for the 2026 World Cup?
Uruguay finished fourth in the CONMEBOL group for the World Cup qualifiers, behind Argentina, Ecuador, and Colombia. Excluding Argentina, who were well ahead, there was little to split the top sides, with just one point separating second and sixth.
Uruguay’s results were a bit of a mixed bag - they were able to pull off some impressive wins, beating both Brazil and Argentina, respectively, by a 2-0 scoreline. However, they were also beaten by Peru, who finished ninth in the standings, with just two wins from their 18 matches.
Uruguay’s final record was seven wins, seven draws, and four losses, putting them comfortably in the top six.
👔 Who is the Uruguay manager at the World Cup 2026?
Bielsa’s all-out-attack approach at Leeds United made his side an entertaining side to watch, and he went on to take on the job as Uruguay head coach after departing Elland Road in February 2022.
Bielsa introduced a much younger squad upon his arrival, and they performed well in his first major tournament - securing a 3rd-place finish at the Copa America. Uruguay are slightly more reserved in their approach now, aiming to keep things tight, but they still like to press strongly in a 4-3-3 shape.
🔎 Who are Uruguay's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?
Darwin Nunez
Darwin Nunez has had a limited role for Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League this season, having been de-registered from the squad to allow space for Karim Benzema to feature.
The former Liverpool man made a brief appearance off the bench against England and is likely to return to the starting lineup for the World Cup. Nunez might not be the most prolific, but his energy is essential for this Uruguay press.
Max Araujo
Max Araujo has six goals and four assists to his name from 33 appearances for Sporting Lisbon this season across all competitions, which are impressive numbers for a wingback. He is another player who suits Bielsa’s style down to a tee, and he is given a bit more attacking freedom for his national side.
Araujo was a consistent figure in the starting lineup during the World Cup qualifiers, contributing four assists in 15 appearances.
Fede Valverde
Fede Valverde is the main man for Uruguay and is given a massive role in the heart of midfield. If Rodrigo Bentancur is fit enough to feature, he should feature alongside Valverde and Manuel Ugarte in midfield - Valverde will be the most attack-minded of the trio.
The Real Madrid man is also on penalties, and he converted a late one against England to level the scores. He has also impressed domestically, with eight goals and 12 assists under his belt, making this his most prolific season to date in terms of goal involvement.
