📈 Hull v Wrexham Form & Stats

It has been alluded to a few times, but Hull come into this game in questionable form. Their defeat on TV last Friday made it four defeats in six league matches, and the four goals that they conceded made it 18 in their last 10 matches, and 34 conceded this season, just three off Sheffield Wednesday’s total.

It was also the fourth match in a row that Hull lost the xG battle, and the eighth time in ten matches that this has happened. This suggests that Hull have not been playing well recently, and the results seem to have followed. It isn’t all bad for Hull, though. They maintain a good position in some attacking metrics; they rank fifth for shots on target, and there is a hint to their style of play in the data as well, with them ranking second in the league for accurate long passes forward.

Wrexham are drawing a lot of matches, so their ten-match unbeaten run in the league hasn’t propelled them into the play-offs just yet. Back-to-back 1-1 draws at home to Blackburn and away at Preston came in very different circumstances, scoring very late against Rovers, but very early against Preston, but both demonstrate that Wrexham are not easy to play against and certainly not easy to win against.

The Dragons are very much mid-table for many of the statistical metrics. They are 15th for expected goals and 13th for shots on target. However, we can expect to see a lot of direct play; they are just behind Hull in the accurate long passes metric, and down in 22nd for touches in the opponents' box, which indicates that they play in there for the finishing touch.

📔 Hull v Wrexham Formation & Team News

THull will play a back four unless there is a change of plan from Sergej Jakirovic. They have been quite wedded to a 4-2-3-1 system, albeit there is a lot of flexibility in the forward ranks. Oli McBurnie is close to making a starting return after appearing on the bench last Friday, whilst Mohamed Belloumi and Charlie Hughes feel likely to start after being half-time substitutes and having a good impact when they came on.

Wrexham’s 3-5-2 shape will remain in place for this match. It is a system that has worked well for Phil Parkinson and Wrexham for a long time now, and it is clear that all the players are well-drilled in what they need to do to make the system work.

There is no injury and suspension availability changes for Parkinson to be concerned about ahead of this game, but Parkinson may decide that it is time for some rotation given the workload, especially at wing-back, but potentially up front as well, with Josh Windass in line for a recall.
