🎩 My World Cup Group Stage Predictions

Group A

🇲🇽 Mexico
🇨🇿 Czechia
🇰🇷 South Korea
🇿🇦 South Africa

Mexico top this group comfortably for me, they’ve got a serious advantage with all three of their matches being at the Azteca - they haven’t lost there since 2013.

2nd place is a fist fight between Czechia and Korea, I’d lean towards the European side. They’ve got real aerial threats including Tomas Soucek and Patrik Schick.

South Africa are the weakest side in this group, I expect them to finish bottom. They had a kind qualifying group and haven’t won any of their friendlies in the lead up to the tournament.

Group B

🇨🇭 Switzerland
🇨🇦 Canada
🇧🇦 Bosnia
🇶🇦 Qatar

Switzerland could really benefit from this fairly easy group, they’re by far the most established nation of the four at this level.

Canada have shown small glimpses of promise under Jesse Marsch, they’ll have a small boost from being one of the host nations.

Bosnia had to beat Wales and Italy to qualify for the World Cup, I think they’ll get out of the group but not much further.

Qatar look like one of the weakest sides at the tournament, they couldn’t even get going as the host nation four years ago and I don’t see that changing.

Group C

🇧🇷 Brazil
🇲🇦 Morocco
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland
🇭🇹 Haiti

Scotland are winning it all, but they’ll probably finish 3rd in this group.

Brazil are the strongest side on paper, but Morocco can certainly offer them a decent challenge as AFCON champions (controversially).

Haiti are the weakest side in the group but they can still offer an attacking threat through Wilson Isidor and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.

Group D

🇹🇷 Turkey
🇺🇸 USA
🇵🇾 Paraguay
🇦🇺 Australia

I’m going against the odds here, I think this is the most open group, and I can see Turkey topping it.

I’m not convinced by the USA, the mood doesn’t feel right for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, even as one of the host nations.

Paraguay are capable of causing a shock or two, but I see them and Australia as the bottom two sides in this group.

This is the hardest group to call for me.

Group E

🇩🇪 Germany
🇪🇨 Ecuador
🇨🇮 Ivory Coast
🇨🇼 Curacao

Germany have everything but a true goalscorer. If they had that, they’d be amongst the favourites for the tournament.

You’ve got two potential dark horses in this group as well, Ecuador and Ivory Coast have plenty to be optimistic about. Both impressed in qualifying, Ecuador’s backline is very strong.

Curacao will struggle to get a point, they’re a good story but I can’t see them emerging from a very tough group.

Group F

🇯🇵 Japan
🇳🇱 Netherlands
🇸🇪 Sweden
🇹🇳 Tunisia

Another upset for me here, I’m backing Japan to top the group ahead of the Netherlands.

Ronald Koeman has not convinced me at all as the Dutch coach and they made tough work of qualifying at times, despite a relatively kind group.

Japan are a very cohesive side and have real momentum ahead of this tournament with recent wins against some big nations, including England.

Sweden are pretty average for me, but the options of Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak set them apart from Tunisia, who are really poor.

Generic

Group G

🇧🇪 Belgium
🇪🇬 Egypt
🇮🇷 Iran
🇳🇿 New Zealand

The weakest group at the tournament by far. I expect Belgium to come out on top, probably with all nine points.

Egypt are probably the closest challengers, mainly because New Zealand are really poor and Iran are dealing with various off-field issues.

Group H

🇪🇸 Spain
🇺🇾 Uruguay
🇨🇻 Cape Verde
🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia

Spain should comfortably top this group as reigning European Champions and pre-tournament favourites to win the World Cup.

Uruguay should also have enough quality to edge out Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.

Keep an eye on Cape Verde, for me they’re the most convincing of the minnows and I give them a (slim) chance of finding a path through to the last 32 with a 3rd-placed finish.

Group I

🇫🇷 France
🇸🇳 Senegal
🇳🇴 Norway
🇮🇶 Iraq

The so-called ‘group of death’ with the first fixture between France and Senegal mirrors that of the 2002 World Cup, which was a disaster for France (losing 1-0).

Senegal and Norway are two ‘dark horses’, so this group takes on a similar look to Group E. I expect France to come out on top, and Senegal have slightly more international pedigree than Norway so I put them as runners up.

Iraq will be lucky to get anything from this tournament, they’re definitely the weakest side in the group.

Group J

🇦🇷 Argentina
🇦🇹 Austria
🇩🇿 Algeria
🇯🇴 Jordan

Argentina should be able to start the defence of their World Cup crown by topping quite a weak group overall.

Austria are their closest challengers, though I’m a bit concerned about their style of play in these conditions - particularly with the heat.

Algeria have the quality to beat Jordan to 3rd. I still think Riyad Mahrez has enough to lead them to a potential knockout clash.

Group K

🇵🇹 Portugal
🇨🇴 Colombia
🇺🇿 Uzbekistan
🇨🇩 DR Congo

Portugal have a kind group, the clash against Colombia is their biggest challenge but I still think Roberto Martinez’s side come out of the group relatively unscathed.

DR Congo and Uzbekistan are not near the level of the other two sides in the group, but I just put Uzbekistan ahead of Congo due to the success they’ve had in recent youth tournaments - they’re a nation that are emerging on the footballing stage.

Colombia have a lot of aging players, but again their individual quality trumps that of Congo and Uzbekistan in one-off games.

Group L

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England
🇭🇷 Croatia
🇬🇭 Ghana
🇵🇦 Panama

Unfortunately, it looks like England will top this group pretty comfortably. They didn’t concede a single goal in qualifying and have made light work of the group stage in recent tournaments.

Croatia are a complete side and should be able to beat Ghana and Panama with ease. I’m a little concerned about Ghana, but again their individual quality puts them ahead of Panama for me.
