Still, Barcelona have a commanding lead at the top of the Spanish top flight, and they have secured six consecutive victories across all competitions prior to this weekend clash.

Pape Gueye has linked up with the Senegal squad for AFCON, joining Santiago Mourino and Gerard Moreno on the list of unavailable players for Villarreal. Tajon Buchanan could be set for a recall to the starting eleven after featuring for the second half midweek, while Renato Veiga should partner Juan Foyth at the back. Tomas Partey has been absent for the last three games for Villarreal, so is unlikely to play a part this weekend.

Ronald Araujo, Gavi and Dani Olmo remain unavailable for Barcelona, while Robert Lewandowski is doubtful to feature. Ferran Torres is the prime candidate to lead the line, with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha hoping to provide for him. Eric Garcia has been the preferred option in midfield alongside Pedri in recent weeks, but Frenkie de Jong could return to the eleven here. Hansi Flick has had to deal with a fair share of injuries this season, but has a strong selection of players to choose from this weekend.
