Chelsea travel to Turf Moor to take on Burnley, who currently sit outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone as the battle at the bottom of the table starts to take shape.

Chelsea can move to second and within three points of Arsenal with a win here. There are early murmurings of Chelsea being a potential dark horse in the title race, but awkward games like this will be a true litmus test to see if they are ready for that challenge.

📈 Burnley v Chelsea Form & Tactics

Burnley haven’t sprung any surprises this season in terms of how they play. Their style mirrors the approach that Scott Parker took in the Championship, with the Clarets understanding that they can’t go toe-to-toe with a lot of sides in the Premier League, or they may face the fate that Southampton did last season.

The newly promoted sides, in general, have been more competitive this term, with Sunderland being the most eye-catching. The important thing for Burnley and Leeds at the moment is that they will feel they are still keeping pace with the other struggling sides as we approach a busy period of the season, which could shape Burnley’s campaign.

Burnley have popped up with crucial wins against their rivals this season, with their three victories coming against Sunderland, Leeds and Wolves - with two of these wins coming at Turf Moor. It’s important that Burnley continue to pick up points against the sides around them as it will make sure that they aren’t cut adrift, like Wolves are currently.

Chelsea enjoyed a positive period just before the international break with just one defeat from their last nine matches across all competitions. Maresca is starting to find the right balance with this side between the various competitions that Chelsea play in.

Chelsea have been strong on the road so far this season, winning three of their five matches, with their only defeat coming at Old Trafford - a game that was thrown away within the first few minutes after Robert Sanchez’s sending off. They’ve scored 12 goals across these games, which is the joint highest tally in the Premier League, alongside Tottenham.

📔Burnley v Chelsea Formation & Team News

Burnley will either line up in a 5-4-1 or a 4-4-2, and are expected to sit in a low block and look to pick Chelsea off on the counter attack. This is the style that Burnley have been playing with all season, and it’s unlikely to change. Burnley can offer a threat on the counter attack, mainly through Jaidon Anthony, who has been their best player this season with five goal contributions in the league already.

Chelsea will line up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, but the shape you’ll see them in for the majority of the game is a 3-2-4-1, with the Blues expected to dominate the ball. This is the structure that Chelsea default to when in possession, with Maresca instilling a few tactical tweaks to ensure that Chelsea can break down low blocks more effectively.

These include increasing Chelsea’s output from set pieces, and establishing intelligent patterns to drag around the opponents defenders - Cucurella, Fernandez and Garnacho did this expertly against Wolves to platform the winger to get two assists against a low block.

Chelsea still have Cole Palmer sidelined for this encounter. He’s been most recently joined by Romeo Lavia on the treatment table, with Levi Colwill and Dario Essugo being longer term absentees.

📊 Burnley v Chelsea Key Stats

  • Chelsea have scored the joint-most goals on the road in the Premier League this season (12).

  • Burnley’s three wins in the Premier League this season have been against Wolves, Leeds and Sunderland.

  • Chelsea rank second in the Premier League for both corners won (71) and fouls won (138).

  • Burnley rank bottom in the Premier League for possession (38.4%)
