📈 Newcastle v Chelsea Form & Tactics
Newcastle needed that late winner against Fulham in the quarter finals of the EFL Cup during the week after a tough week for the Magpies which included a defeat against Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear Derby.
There may be a bit of pressure on Eddie Howe as Newcastle sit 12th in the league table after 16 matches, though Newcastle did sit in a similar position at this point last season before going on a strong run to secure a Champions League spot.
Newcastle have failed to keep a clean sheet across their last nine matches across all competitions which is a very surprising statistic as Eddie Howe usually sets up the side to be secure at the back. This has meant that Newcastle have had to be more of a threat in the final third, netting 2+ goals in six of these matches.
Chelsea returned to winning ways in the Premier League last weekend with a solid 2-0 win over Everton which was a victory that ended a run of four games without a win across all competitions. Chelsea usually find the middle of the season really tough, it was in December that the Blues fell away from the title race last term and similar could manifest here with Chelsea taking on Villa and Bournemouth before the year is out.
Maresca’s recent comments in press conferences suggest that there is a bit of tension between the boss and the club's hierarchy. In truth, they always looked on course for this collision with Chelsea’s approach to transfers and managers since the new ownership took over. I wouldn’t expect any change to happen before the end of the year, but another poor period of form for the Blues could see this issue worsen quickly.
📔 Newcastle v Chelsea Formation & Team News
Newcastle will line up in a 4-3-3 and I always think they are at their best when both Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall play in the fullback positions. This duo allow Newcastle to create overloads in the wide areas, even if sides are playing with a back three against them. I think this is a good avenue to try and expose Chelsea, who always send at least one of their fullbacks roaming.
The standout player for Newcastle in recent weeks has been Lewis Miley. He scored the winner against Fulham during the week, showing his versatility as he filled in at right back but still managed two shots on target and a goal.
Miley can get missed in discussions about Newcastle’s midfield, but he crucially offers something a bit different to the muscle of Tonali, Guimaraes and Joelinton. Miley has registered four goal contributions across his 19 appearances in all competitions this season, already double his tally from last term.
Chelsea will line up in a 3-2-4-1 shape when in possession but I think their shape and attitude when without the ball will be key here. We’ve already seen Chelsea collapse in intense atmospheres this season, with their recent defeat to Leeds coming to mind, and there is arguably no tougher away ground to visit in the Premier League than St James’ Park.
Chelsea’s young squad have had an issue in dealing with these environments since Maresca took over. Their implosion at Old Trafford is another example this season of Chelsea failing to manage a game away from home. This is mainly due to the youthful nature of the squad, which will continue to be Chelsea’s achilles heel unless they add some experience to the side.
Palmer is set to return to the squad here after being rested during the week, but Chelsea have picked up a fresh injury issue with Estevao confirmed unavailable for this clash by Maresca - though it is thought to be a minor issue that shouldn’t see the Brazilian sidelined for too long.
📊 Newcastle v Chelsea Key Stats
