Newcastle v Chelsea
📅
Kick Off: Wednesday 30th October at 19:45
🏆
Competition: Carabao Cup
📺
Watch Live: Sky Sports +
Newcastle United and Chelsea re-engage for the second time in three days in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. This time the clash is at St James’ Park, where Eddie Howe’s side will be hoping to gain revenge for a 2-1 league defeat at Stamford Bridge. Both sides overcame League Two opposition in the third round.
⭐ Newcastle v Chelsea Best Bets
This competition is a lot more important to Newcastle than it is to Chelsea. The Blues’ main ambition this season is to qualify for the Champions League through a top four finish. They are also competing in the Europa Conference League, usually with a heavily rotated 11, which we think will also make up the majority of the lineup here.
The Magpies and Eddie Howe are craving a trophy, and realistically this competition represents one of two chances to do so. We, therefore, expect them to field a strong side, Newcastle to win is our best bet.

🔍 Newcastle v Chelsea Players to Watch
🔵 Christopher Nkunku
Nkunku has started all five of Chelsea’s games in cup competitions this season and has scored in all of them. He has eight goals in all competitions despite only starting six games in total.
He notched a hat-trick in the last round against League Two side Barrow. Nkunku will be the penalty taker should The Blues be awarded one and has already dispatched three of them in the Europa Conference League.
⚫️ Sean Longstaff
Sean Longstaff is averaging 1.4 fouls per 90 so far this season for Newcastle across all competitions.
The box-to-box midfielder averaged very close to one foul per game across over 40 90s last season. He will be surrounded here by the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Joao Felix and Mykhailo Murdyk who all know how to draw a foul out of their opposite number. He is a fair price to get booked here at 4.50. He picked yellow cards up at a rate of 0.23 per 90 in the Premier League last season.

💻 Newcastle v Chelsea Form and Tactics
Newcastle very rarely stray from their tried and tested 4-3-3. They’re struggling for goals this season, only averaging one per game after 11 games. After 11 games last season they were at 2.27 per game. Only three players have scored more than once in the Premier League, with three the highest tally (Harvey Barnes), who has not even been a regular starter. Goalkeeper Nick Pope has been the third-busiest in the league this season, having to make 4.4 saves per 90.
Anthony Gordon missed the weekend’s game with a groin niggle, but will hope to be back in contention for this one given he travelled to Stamford Bridge on Saturday with a chance of playing.
Enzo Maresca has shuffled his pack well so far this season, with the cup competitions giving him a chance to keep the bloated Chelsea squad content for the timebeing. We already know the likes of Reece James and Wesley Fofana will not be playing, having made a commitment to use them only once per week as they build up game-time after a host of injury issues. The likes of Renato Veiga, Benoit Badiashile, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Joao Felix, Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku are all likely to feature here, in Maresca’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.
