📂 Chelsea v PSG Cheat Sheet
📈 Chelsea v PSG Form & Tactics
Chelsea faced a further setback over the weekend following their 5-2 thrashing at the Parc Des Princes, with Liam Rosenior’s side losing ground in the top four race as Chelsea lost 1-0 to Newcastle in a pretty lacklustre display. Chelsea really struggled to find a way through Newcastle’s low block with 22 shots - but only three managed to find the target.
Chelsea can’t really control games at the moment, Liam Rosenior’s style leans towards chaos and reminds me quite a bit of the approach that Mauricio Pochettino took at Chelsea, which saw the Blues involved in multiple end-to-end and basketball-like games. Chelsea don’t have the individual quality to play like this against a side as good as PSG, who showed how clinical they can be in the first leg.
PSG didn’t have a game over the weekend as their clash with Nantes was controversially postponed, giving them a bit of a fitness advantage over Chelsea ahead of this clash. It’ll be interesting to see if Rosenior mentions this; he’s been a bit too involved in off-the-field politics over the last few weeks, with his latest tangent being about his players ‘respecting the ball' in reference to their pre-game huddles, which Paul Tierney was caught in the middle of over the weekend.
Luis Enrique is the example of everything that Rosenior is not when it comes to the quality and focus of a coach. It’s clear that Enrique is far superior to Rosenior tactically, and knows that he won’t have to engineer space through his own tactics as Chelsea will naturally give this up as they go chasing a way back into the tie. I think Chelsea will struggle in those moments, and there should be more joy for PSG as a result.
📔 Chelsea v PSG Formation & Team News
Liam Rosenior opted for Filip Jorgensen in goal for the first leg clash, but I doubt that he’ll go for Chelsea’s backup keeper again here after the shocker that Jorgensen had in Paris. PSG got three of their five goals in the first leg from Chelsea being careless at the back, and Jorgensen gave chances to PSG’s talented front three.
Chelsea lined up with three at the back when in possession during that clash, with Malo Gusto being given licence to get forward, which ended up with the full back getting on the scoresheet from two shots in total. This back three was left far too exposed, which was most obvious for Ousmane Dembele’s goal as he twisted Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana inside out before slotting past Jorgensen with ease.
PSG were obviously clinical in the first leg, but when you are conceding five goals from an xG of 0.90, there are serious problems of mentality and focus in the squad, which are long term issues that Chelsea have been dealing with since the new ownership arrived.
PSG should line up in their usual 4-3-3 shape, and look to press Chelsea in the same way they did in the first leg - knowing that the Blues are susceptible to mistakes at the back. It doesn’t appear to make much difference when PSG are without players, Luis Enrique has perfected the system and shape so that most of his squad can implement his ideas regardless of their individual quality - another sign of a top coach.
