Man United v Crystal Palace
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 2nd February at 14:00
🏆
Competition: Premier League
Ruben Amorim’s Man United side have shown signs of life recently, with 4 wins from their last 5 games in all competitions. The performances haven’t exactly been stellar, but it’s clear that Amorim is taking this United side in the right direction.
Crystal Palace’s 2-1 defeat to Brentford last time out brought an end to a 6-game unbeaten run which included respectable results against Chelsea and Bournemouth. Oliver Glasner is getting as much as he can out of this side, but their defeat to Thomas Frank’s side in their most recent Premier League game highlighted some areas for improvement.
⭐ Man United v Crystal Palace Best Bet
Eze has won 33 fouls across his 19 Premier League appearances this season (1.87 per 90). He’s incredibly strong at carrying the ball through central areas which naturally invites challenges, evidenced by his 2.09 successful dribbles per 90 in the Premier League this season.
He’ll be up against Manuel Ugarte who is averaging 2.44 fouls committed per 90 and has struggled at times with the increased speed of the Premier League. Ugarte has the physicality to compete in the English game but does lack some of the positional discipline and sharp thinking that comes with this level of Premier League football.
Eze was fouled 3 times in the initial meeting between these sides back in September, Ugarte wasn’t even in the side on that occasion. The Uruguayan’s introduction will expose Eze even further to late challenges in the middle of the park which should see him hauled down at least twice in this encounter.

Mateta is finding the form that made him such a lethal striker in the Premier League in the second half of last season, he’s scored 4 goals across his last 5 Premier League appearances – half of his whole total for the season, further evidencing the rich vein of form he currently finds himself in. Crystal Palace have scored at least once in each of their last 6 games across all competitions.
Man United are coming off the back of a Europa League trip to Romania, in which Amorim didn’t opt for wholesale changes, which could result in a slight hangover in the early stages of this game. United conceded after just 5 minutes in their most recent Premier League match at Old Trafford and Palace could identify that as a potential weakness here.

🔍 Man United v Crystal Palace Players to Watch
🔴 Bruno Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes has registered 11 goal contributions across his 22 Premier League appearances this season (5 goals, 6 assists).
He’s been involved in the majority of Man United’s positive attacking play this campaign as further evidenced by his chance creation record (2.30 per 90) as well as his role over penalties and set pieces for Manchester United. He scored from the penalty spot in Manchester United’s most recent game at Old Trafford in a 3-1 defeat to Brighton.
🔵 Jean-Philippe Mateta
Mateta has scored 8 goals across his 23 Premier League appearances this season, 4 of which have come in his last 5 Premier League matches as the 27-year-old has found form at a crucial time for Oliver Glasner’s side. He’s found the target at least once in each of his last 5 Premier League appearances, averaging 0.96 shots on target per 90 across his 23 appearances across the season as a whole.
Mateta was taken off after just 45 minutes in the initial meeting between Palace and United, but his replacement, Ismaila Sarr, found the target, meaning this selection would have been a winner in that particular encounter thanks to Super Sub.

💻 Man United v Crystal Palace Form and Tactics
There’s been a lot of noise around Man United’s transition to a back 3 under Ruben Amorim, but the players are starting to adapt to how the former Sporting boss wants them to play. Amorim is still experimenting with what profiles work best for his system, for example, he played Kobbie Mainoo as a number 10 in United’s 2-0 win over FCSB in the Europa League last time out, Mainoo was excellent in this more advanced position in having a hand in both goals.
The back 3 are instructed to be very aggressive in jumping in to support the midfield so keep an eye on Maguire, Martinez and De Ligt for fouls in this one. United are still a little blunt in the attacking department with neither Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee fully convincing as a number 9, but Garnacho and Diallo in the inside forward areas can be a real threat.
Crystal Palace line up in a very similar shape with the key difference being that the wingbacks are a lot more defensively minded, particularly Mitchell on the left-hand side. For this reason, expect the majority of United’s success to come down the right-hand side of the pitch where Palace have slightly weaker defensive cover in Daniel Munoz and Chris Richards, both of which were exposed on a few occasions in Crystal Palace’s 2-1 defeat to Brentford last time out.
Palace will still carry an attacking threat through Eze, Mateta and potentially new signing Romain Esse from the start, who came on to score his first Premier League goal last time out.
Palace can be a really stubborn side but have struggled a little more defensively since Trevor Chalobah’s recall to Chelsea. Man United will be eager to put claims of inconsistency behind them, with 4 wins in their last 5 games across all competitions it’s possible that Amorim is leading a true change at the club, but performances in the Premier League have been below-par to date.
